Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to shop at Bütic, including with a screen reader, using only the keyboard, with magnification or with little time. This statement tells you what our shop does to achieve this, where it is not yet there and whom you can contact. It applies to the online shop at www.bütic.de operated by Bütic GmbH and is based on the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG, German Accessibility Strengthening Act), Annex 3.
Last updated: 14 October 2026. We review the shop on an ongoing basis and update this statement at least once a year.
How shopping with us works
Bütic is an online shop for wooden decorations, clipboards, household and lifestyle items, many of them made in our own production facility in Pößneck. The process is the same throughout:
- Finding: via the categories in the page header or via the search. The search also understands partial words and suggests matching terms as you type.
- Selecting: On the product page, you choose the version, size or colour and the quantity. The price, unit price, shipping costs and the expected delivery date are shown directly with the product.
- Basket and checkout: The basket shows all items, the shipping costs and the total. At checkout, you enter your address and payment method, either as a guest or with a customer account. Before purchasing, you see a complete overview; only the “Order with obligation to pay” button places the order.
- Afterwards: You receive a confirmation by e-mail, later the shipping confirmation with shipment tracking and the invoice as a PDF.
- Are you stuck at any point? Send us an e-mail (see contact details below). We will help you complete your order in the shop and, if required, send you information in a different format. We accept orders exclusively via the shop, not by telephone.
What we do for accessibility
The benchmark is the European standard EN 301 549 with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA. Specifically, the shop currently meets, among other things, the following:
- Keyboard operation: Navigation, search, filters, sorting, product selection, image gallery and tabs can be operated entirely with the keyboard; the keyboard focus is visible. The basket and checkout are forms that do not require a mouse.
- Touch targets: On touch devices, the selection buttons for colour and size, the arrows of the image gallery, the button for closing the basket drawer and the buttons in the header are at least 44 x 44 pixels in size.
- Videos: Below each product video there is a text description of what can be seen and whether the video has sound or speech; for screen readers, it is linked to the video.
- Tested paths: In September 2026, we tested the shop against WCAG 2.1 AA: 25 pages across all areas (home page, categories, product pages, search, basket, checkout, customer account, blog as well as the terms and conditions, privacy policy, legal notice and the withdrawal form) and, in addition, the states that a list of pages does not cover: the logged-in account with orders, the order confirmation, the checkout with a discount code and with Amazon Pay, open overlays and forms in the event of errors. The issues found have been resolved: the keyboard focus no longer moves into closed drawers; an opened basket or filter moves the focus into it and back again when closed; error messages during login, at checkout and for discount codes are announced to screen readers and name the field concerned; the privacy settings can be reached with the keyboard right at the start; the search suggestions announce the selected result when scrolling through them; and the image view can be opened, operated and exited with the keyboard. In October 2026, we carried out a follow-up test using an extended procedure: 38 pages on desktop and on mobile, plus the basket, wish list, filters, sorting, search and image view step by step with the keyboard. Since then, the focus remains on the button after changing a quantity in the basket, and the new quantity is announced; after setting a filter, the focus returns to the selected filter instead of the top of the page; the sorting only changes once you confirm your choice with the Enter key; the buttons in the basket name the item to which they belong; and wide tables can be scrolled sideways with the keyboard on mobile.
- Skip link: The first press of the Tab key brings up the “Skip to content” link, which lets you skip the header and navigation on every page.
- Screen readers: The pages have a clear structure of headings and regions, images have alternative texts (for exceptions, see “Known limitations”), the selection of versions is marked up as a selection group, and price, stock and error messages are announced.
- Readability: Texts and controls have sufficient contrast; the page can be enlarged to 200% and adapts to narrow screens without anything being cut off.
- No time-pressure mechanisms: There are no time limits in the ordering process, no countdowns and no image puzzles (CAPTCHAs).
- Motion: Animations and smooth scrolling are switched off if your device has “Reduce motion” enabled. Videos never start automatically.
- Forms: Mandatory fields are marked, errors are identified when the form is submitted, and entries are retained while you make corrections.
- Plain language: We write in German, concisely and without jargon; the page language is specified for screen readers.
How we tested: Self-assessment by Bütic GmbH, using an automated testing tool (axe-core and Lighthouse) and manually, by operating each page using only the keyboard. The follow-up test in October 2026 was carried out with real keystrokes via our testing tool: for each keyboard step, it records what a screen reader announces and whether the focus is visible, and it searches for controls that only work with a mouse. We repeat the test whenever major changes are made to the shop, but at least once a year.
Known limitations
To be honest, not everything is there yet. We are aware of the following points and are working on them (as at 14 October 2026):
- The longer video about the fermentation bucket (with spoken commentary) does not yet have subtitles; a text description is provided below the video. Planned: by the end of 2026.
- Some of the product images do not yet have an image description for screen readers. We are currently adding them, starting with the images that appear first on the product pages. Planned: by the end of 2026.
- The payment windows of PayPal, Amazon Pay and Klarna come from the providers themselves; we cannot change how they are operated. If you have difficulty using them: prepayment by bank transfer runs entirely in our own form, or write to us and we will help.
- Downloadable product information (PDF) is not consistently prepared in an accessible format. Ask us and we will send you the content in a format that suits you.
