Clipboards – practical helpers at home and at work

4 min read

Selection of clipboards

What is a clipboard?

A clipboard is a portable, rigid writing surface with a clip at the top edge. The clip holds sheets, forms or lists in place. You can write on it without a table, standing up or on the go. Most clipboards are made for A4. You can also get them for A3, A5 or A6.

In the office, at school or on the move: clipboards are useful wherever you need to write quickly and flexibly.

What else is a clipboard called?

A clipboard has many names. You may hear writing board, writing plate or writing pad with clip. German even borrows the English word clipboard. If it has a cover that protects the sheets, it is called a clipboard folder. Depending on its use, it is also called a menu holder, script holder or presenter board.

What does the clipboard icon mean?

On computers and mobiles, a small clipboard icon stands for the clipboard, the place where copied content is stored. You will usually find it next to the “Paste” command. Whatever you copy is held there for a short time – like a note on a clipboard.

The main uses

Mobile work and field service

Clipboards are ideal for work on the go – for tradespeople, technicians, carers or delivery services.

In schools and exams

Clipboards are used regularly in classrooms and during written exams.

For surveys and interviews

In surveys, market research or public consultations, they help you record answers quickly.

In healthcare and nursing

Nurses and doctors use clipboards to keep patient details close at hand.

Creative work

Designers, artists and architects use clipboards for sketching, drawing or jotting down ideas.

As a script holder on stage and in the studio

Presenters, speakers, actors and voice artists use them to keep scripts, cue cards or speech notes together. The clip stops pages from flying away. The sturdy wood sits steadily in your hand. A5 or A6 suits cue cards, A4 suits scripts. If you turn a lot of pages, choose a ring binder clipboard: the pages are filed in it and cannot fall out.

Why choose our clipboards?

We make our clipboards entirely in our own production: from design and lacquering to cutting and final assembly.

This means custom orders with other sizes, shapes and personalised engravings go through a single contact person. The process stays short.

You can choose from two materials: 3 mm stained birch plywood and 3 mm unlacquered HDF. For birch plywood, you can choose from 37 stain colours.

Our production in Thuringia

Production is 100 % in our own hands – from cutting the raw material and staining and sanding to laser cutting. The final step is fitting the clip of your choice.

As raw material, we use HDF (high-density fibreboard) and 3 mm thick birch plywood. The HDF is sanded very finely and otherwise left untreated. We laser-cut it to the shape and size you choose.

Our shapes

You can choose between the standard shape, segment shape, wooden board shape, convex and concave shapes, plus various special shapes such as the surfboard shape and the bar format for bills.

Our colours

For the 3 mm thick birch plywood, you can choose from 37 stain colours. You will find a colour overview at klemmbrett.de.

The plywood is stained in colour on both sides. It is then coated with clear lacquer, sanded and sealed once more. We only use water-based clear lacquer. The result is a smooth surface with visible wood grain that feels pleasant to the touch. And your clipboard is easy to clean with a damp cloth.

Our clips

How should the sheet be held? You can choose a spring clip, a wire clip or a ring binder mechanism – modern, antique or classic and simple.

Both clips are also available individually or in sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100 if you want to make your own clipboards.

  • Spring clip in 7 colours (gold, silver, rose gold, black, antique finish, rainbow, brushed copper), width 70 mm or 110 mm.
  • Wire clip in 8 colours (silver carbon as well), width 70 mm or 120 mm.

Custom orders

Looking for something made to your needs? We are happy to make other sizes, your own shapes and engravings such as a logo or lettering for you.

Describe your project using our contact form and upload your sketch. We will turn it into a digital template and send it to you.

Summary

Clipboards are small helpers with a big impact: simple, but extremely practical. They bring mobility, order and speed – at school, in the office, in field service or as a script holder on stage.
