The nativity scene is set up and the little house is built. But the roof still looks bare. With these semicircular veneer shingles in a beaver-tail cut, you cover it row by row until the roof is evenly closed. Just right for your Christmas crafting. The dark real wood gives the roof the look of genuine timber. Printed card can never match that.

What changes for you

  • Your model roof looks true to scale and neatly tiled – because every shingle is precision laser-cut after you order and has smooth edges.
  • You'll find the right size for almost any scale – thanks to 28 sizes to choose from, ranging from 15 mm x 7.5 mm to 150 mm x 75 mm.
  • You're free to design as you like – the wood is untreated and can be glued, painted, varnished or oiled.
  • Your nativity scene or pyramid gets genuine material character – because every piece of veneer has its own grain, making each one unique.
  • You're working with thin, delicate material that's easy to handle – at a thickness of just approx. 0.6 to 1 mm.

Why these veneer shingles make a difference

A roof often decides whether a model looks like a kit or like handiwork made with an eye for detail. Real wooden shingles with a rounded cut give your nativity scene, model house or pyramid a surface that looks alive and reflects light warmly. Take a closer look and you'll spot the grain – and it's exactly this closer look that makes your work so appealing.

Material & finish

The shingles are made of dark real wood veneer. They are produced in Bütic's own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. We laser-cut them precisely to size only once you have ordered. Laser cutting gives smooth edges and a clean finish. So you don't need to tidy anything up before gluing. The wood is untreated, neither varnished nor glazed. In its natural state it is suitable for indoor use. If you want to use it outdoors, treat it first, for example with oil. As a purely natural material, every piece has its own structure. Differences in shade, slight irregularities in the grain or small knots are normal. They are not a defect. They are what makes your shingles unique.

How to use the shingles

  • Before Christmas: you cover the roof of your pyramid row by row – and suddenly it looks like a real, true-to-scale shingle roof in the candlelight.
  • For the nativity scene: give the stable and the inn a dark wooden shingle roof. Lay it row by row, with visible grain and the real weight of wood.
  • In model making: houses, towers or mills get a roof covering that suits the scale – thanks to the wide choice of sizes, there's no need to cut anything to size.
  • For decorating and crafting: you decorate boxes, picture frames or seasonal decorations with the semicircular shingles – painted, oiled or left natural, just as you like.
  • For shop decoration: in window or counter displays with little houses, real wooden roof shingles give a visibly different surface from printed card. Customers notice that detail.

Good to know about the beaver tail shingle

The beaver tail shape owes its name to its semicircular lower edge, which resembles the flat tail of a beaver – as a roof tile, it has been part of the familiar look of many German old towns for centuries. That's exactly why models and nativity scenes with beaver tail shingles look so authentic: the eye instantly recognises the traditional roof shape.

Care & durability

There's not much you need to do: indoors, you can leave the shingles untreated and reuse them for years. If they're going to be used outdoors, treat the wood first – for example by oiling it – so it can stand up to wind and weather. Keep untreated veneer away from constant moisture and it will keep its look for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the shingles outdoors? In their natural state they're only suitable for indoor use. For outdoor use, you'll need to treat the wood first, for example with oil.

Can the shingles be painted or decorated? Yes. The veneer is untreated and can be glued, varnished, painted or oiled.

Do all the shingles look the same? Wood is a natural material: shade and grain vary, and small knots can occur. This isn't a fault – it makes every piece unique.

How thick are the shingles? The material thickness is approx. 0.6 to 1 mm – thin enough for delicate work, even at small scales.

Where do the shingles come from? After you order, we laser-cut them precisely to size in our own production in Pößneck, Thuringia.

In the end, it's not about veneer and laser cutting. It's about the moment the last shingle is in place, you take a step back – and your roof looks as if a roofer had been at work in miniature. Simply choose the size and quantity that suit your project.
