Why these veneer shingles make a real difference
Nativity scene, Christmas pyramid or model house: the roof is the first thing people look at. Real wooden shingles instead of smooth panels give your model depth and texture. It gets the calm, natural look you know from lovingly built pieces. And laying the roof is a cosy crafting moment in itself. Row by row, you can see something taking shape.
Material & finish
Each shingle is made of dark real wood veneer about 0.6 to 1 mm thick. That's thin enough for fine roof structures and sturdy enough to glue neatly. We laser-cut the shingles to size in our own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. We only cut them after you order. The edges are smooth and the finish is clean. The wood is untreated, neither varnished nor glazed. You can use it straight away or decorate it as you like. As a pure natural material, it shows different shades, fine textures in the grain and the occasional small knot. That's not a flaw. It makes every shingle unique – and your roof all the more convincing.

- On a Christmas pyramid: the small roof shingles give the pyramid roof texture. It looks especially warm in candlelight.
- In model making: houses, mills or barns look far more authentic with a real wooden roof than with printed surfaces.
- Crafting with children or in a craft group: the thin veneer is easy to glue and paint. At the end, everyone holds their own little house.
- In shop windows and shop displays: with shingle-roofed miniature houses, you can create a winter scene that makes customers stop and look. It's quick to set up and can be reused every year.
Good to know about the Black Forest shingle
Wooden shingles have been part of the Black Forest for centuries. There they protected the roofs and weather sides of the farmhouses. They still shape the look of the region today. You bring this traditional shape to your model in miniature. It gives your nativity scene or little house a piece of real craft tradition.
Care & durability
There's not much you need to do. Untreated, the shingles are meant for indoor use. Fitted indoors, they last for many years. If your model is going outside, treat the wood first, for example with oil. That way it can withstand moisture long-term.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the shingles outdoors too? Untreated, they are only suitable for indoor use. For outdoor use, you need to treat the wood, for example with oil.
Can the shingles be painted or glued? Yes. The wood is untreated and can be glued, coated, oiled or painted.
Do all the shingles look the same? Not quite – wood is a natural material. Shade and grain vary, and small knots are normal. That's what makes your roof look naturally grown.
What does Black Forest shape with bevel on the right mean? The shingles are laser-cut in the traditional Black Forest cut. The bevelled edge is on the right-hand side. This gives you an even roof pattern when you lay them.
Veneer and bevels are just the means. What counts is the moment you place the last shingle and step back. Suddenly your model looks like a real little house. Just choose the size and quantity. At Bütic, we'll laser-cut your shingles to fit your project.
