Your guests are seated, the cheese is cut and the cold cuts are ready. All that's missing now is the right stage. This oval bark-edge board with handle, made from ash or alder, is made for exactly that at your cold supper. You arrange everything directly on the natural serving board. You carry it to the table by its nicely shaped handle and set it down in the middle. There, the untreated bark edge speaks for itself. As a B-grade item, you get a cleanly finished wooden board at a lower price.

What changes for you

  • Your table looks more inviting without much decorating – because the natural bark and the light, sanded wood surface create atmosphere all on their own.
  • You can easily carry cheese, ham or bread from the kitchen table to the buffet – thanks to the handle, the board sits securely in your hand.
  • You own a piece nobody else has – as a genuine tree slice with bark, every board is unique, with its own grain.
  • You save money without compromising on a neat finish – here, B-grade simply means the bark may have chipped off in places or the surface may show small cracks.
  • You'll find the right size for your purpose – from a compact board for a lunchtime snack to a large platter for the buffet, in up to seven sizes depending on availability.

Why this bark-edge board makes a difference every day

A bark-edge board brings a piece of nature to the table that you can see and feel straight away. The same cheese platter looks more lovingly arranged on wood with a bark edge than on smooth porcelain. No extra decoration needed. And because you can use the board in so many ways, you'll reach for it again and again. Today it's a board for cold cuts at supper. Tomorrow it's a base for candles and table decorations.

Material & finish

The board is made from ash or alder wood and produced in the EU. The surface is sanded very smooth and left untreated – pleasant to the touch and ready to be finished just the way you like: you can oil, wax or varnish the board. Small knots, variations in shade and fine structures in the grain aren't flaws, but exactly what makes real wood unique. With this B-grade item, the bark may also have chipped off in places or small cracks may be visible in the wood surface – the quality of the finish is not affected.

How to use your bark-edge board

  • For an evening snack platter: lay out cold cuts, cheese and fresh bread – and your evening instantly feels like a mountain hut holiday.
  • When friends come round: arranged as a ham or cheese board on the buffet, your guests will tuck in before you've even finished telling them where the board came from.
  • As decoration on a sideboard or dining table: add a candle and a bit of greenery – and you have natural table décor that works all year round.
  • In a café or bakery: cakes and sandwiches presented on a bark-edge board make the counter stand out. It's a simple way to smarten it up without changing your concept.
  • For catering or at the weekly market: combine different sizes for a rustic arrangement. Quick to set up, quick to clear away.

Good to know about the tree slice

Bark-edge boards are also called bark slices or tree slices, because the natural bark edge reveals the outline of the trunk. Ash has traditionally been regarded as a particularly tough and robust wood – it used to be a popular choice for tool handles. These very qualities make the board a companion that copes well with everyday use at the table.

Care & durability

There's not much you need to do: after use, simply wipe it by hand and leave it to dry – natural wood doesn't like being constantly damp. If you'd like to give the untreated surface extra protection, you can oil or wax the board; this keeps the grain looking good for a long time. If you're using the board purely for decoration, you can also varnish it.

Frequently asked questions

What does B-grade mean for this board? Second quality means the bark may have chipped off in places or there may be small cracks in the wood surface. You still get a neatly finished board – at a lower price.

Does every board have a hanging hole? Many models have a hanging hole in the handle. As these are B-grade items, unfortunately it isn't possible to choose between with or without a hanging hole.

Are the dimensions exact? No, all dimensions are approximate. With B-grade items, the boards may turn out slightly wider, narrower, thicker or thinner – every piece is unique.

Can I treat the surface? Yes. The untreated, smoothly sanded surface is suitable for oiling, waxing or varnishing.

What wood is the board made of? Ash or alder, produced in the EU. Colour variations, small knots and structures in the grain are typical of genuine natural wood.

In the end, it's not about a board made of ash or alder. It's about the moment you carry your snack platter to the table and everyone pauses for a second because it simply looks so inviting. Choose your size – at Bütic you'll find the format that suits your table.
