Your centre cane is soaked and ready. The table is clear. All you need now is a base that stays firm while you weave. That is exactly what this round HDF/MDF basket base for 2 mm centre cane is made for. The laser-cut holes hold the stakes neatly, so you can focus fully on your weaving pattern. A few hours at the kitchen table turn into a basket you can be proud of. Just right for your next weaving evening.

What changes for you

  • You weave more evenly and with less effort. The holes in the base are precisely laser-cut, so every stake has its fixed place.
  • Your basket keeps its shape from the first row to everyday use. The 3 mm fibreboard stays stable and does not bend.
  • You will find the right base for every project, from a small decorative basket to a large shopping basket. There are 31 sizes from 5 to 35 cm.
  • You can use any weaving technique you have in mind. Every size is available with an even or an odd number of holes.
  • Even as a beginner, you can start basket weaving without frustration. The hardest part, a clean start to the base, is already done.

Why this basket base makes a difference

In basket weaving, the base decides whether the whole piece stands straight and grows evenly. With a firm, precisely drilled disc as your start, the first rows go calmly and under control. Instead of fighting with slipping stakes, you watch your weave take shape row by row. This makes the work more pleasant and the result visibly neater. That goes for your craft table at home as well as a weaving class.

Material & finish

The basket base is made from sturdy HDF/MDF fibreboard. It keeps its shape even under the tension of weaving. The edges and holes are laser-cut and therefore smooth. Nothing frays and nothing catches when you thread the cane. The board is untreated, so it is neither varnished nor stained. It shows the typical structure of pressed wood fibres. Fibres in different shades and small irregularities are part of it and make every disc a piece of its own. The bases are made in Bütic's own production in Pößneck, Thuringia.

How to use the basket base

  • On a craft evening at home: you insert the stakes and start weaving. At the end, you have a bread basket for the breakfast table.
  • For heartfelt gifts: a hand-woven little basket filled with small treats feels more personal than any shop-bought packaging.
  • In a weaving class or at school: with bases of the same size and a choice of hole count, all participants start from the same clean base. This saves preparation time.
  • For a tidy home: baskets in graded sizes from 5 to 35 cm bring order to shelves, hallway and bathroom. Woven to suit your needs rather than bought off the shelf.
  • For workshops and resellers: sets of 10, 25 or 50 keep you supplied for ongoing projects.

Good to know about basket weaving

Classic weaving with a single, continuous weaver needs an odd number of stakes. This makes the pattern shift from row to row. Many two-strand techniques, on the other hand, need an even number. That is why every one of these basket bases comes in both versions. You choose the number of holes to suit your weaving technique, rather than adapting to the base.

Care & durability

There is not much you need to do. Store the bases in a dry place and protect the finished basket from constant moisture. The untreated fibreboard will then keep its stability and natural look for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Which weaving material are the holes designed for? The holes are made for 2 mm centre cane. The bases are suitable for weaving with centre cane or willow.

Even or odd number of holes – which do I need? That depends on your weaving technique. Every size comes in both versions, so you are free to choose.

Is the basket base treated? No, the fibreboard is untreated, neither varnished nor stained. You can use it in its natural state.

Does the base warp during weaving? No. The 3 mm HDF/MDF board is stable and sturdy. It withstands the tension of weaving without bending.

Why do the boards look different? HDF boards are made from pressed wood fibres. These can vary in shade and show small irregularities. This is typical of the material and makes every disc unique.

A perforated fibreboard disc is only the start. What counts is the moment you turn your finished basket in your hands and think: I made this myself. Simply choose the diameter and number of holes that suit your next project.
