The nativity stable is built, the Christmas pyramid is up – but the roof still looks bare. With these lap shingles made from 3 mm poplar plywood, you cover it row by row until a small, realistic roofscape takes shape. Precisely laser-cut and available in 28 sizes, these wooden shingles are made for your miniature project – whether it's a nativity scene, a model or Christmas decorations.

What changes for you

  • Your model roof looks genuinely tiled – because the lap shingles are fixed in overlapping rows, creating the look of a classic shingle roof in miniature.
  • You'll find the right format for every project without having to cut anything yourself – thanks to 28 sizes from 15 mm x 7.5 mm to 150 mm x 75 mm.
  • You can decorate them exactly as you imagine – the wood is untreated and can be glued, painted, coloured or oiled.
  • You work with clean, precisely sized pieces – because every shingle is laser-cut after you order and has smooth edges with the typical brown rim.
  • You get solid quality from the region – made in Bütic's own production in Pößneck, Thuringia.

Why these wooden shingles make a real difference

A roof often decides whether a model looks like a craft project or a little work of art. With individually fitted shingles, your nativity stable, Christmas pyramid or model-making project gains depth and texture that a flat sheet never could. Laying the roof is a calm, satisfying job in itself: shingle by shingle, the roof grows – and in the end you've built something people love to look at up close.

Material & finish

The shingles are made from poplar plywood approx. 3 mm thick – lightweight, dimensionally stable and easy to glue. The laser cut ensures smooth edges and exact dimensions, and the characteristic brown rim picks out each individual shingle on the finished roof. The wood is untreated, neither varnished nor glazed, and takes paint, stain or oil well. As a purely natural material, it shows varying shades, fine grain patterns and occasionally small knots – not a flaw, but what makes every piece unique.

How to use the lap shingles

  • On the nativity scene: you cover the stable roof with overlapping shingles. This gives the crib the rough, weathered look of a real wooden roof.
  • On a Christmas pyramid: small shingles on the structure turn a simple construction into a lovingly crafted centrepiece for the festive season.
  • In model making: whether it's a half-timbered house, a mill or a small birdhouse, precisely cut shingles make roofs look realistic and detailed.
  • For decorating and painting: paint each shingle in the colour you want and match it perfectly to your project.
  • For shop windows and shop displays: little houses with properly shingled roofs tell a story in your display – and stay in customers' minds.

Good to know about shingles

Wooden shingles are among the oldest roof coverings of all and still shape houses and churches across the Alps today. There they have been laid for centuries in overlapping rows from the bottom up so that rain runs off – and that's exactly how you cover your miniature roof, which is why the result looks so authentic.

Care & durability

There's not much you need to do: in their untreated natural form, the shingles are intended for indoor use and will last for years there. If your project is going outside – a nativity scene by the front door, for example – treat the wood beforehand, for instance with oil. That keeps the surface protected and the roof looking good for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paint or colour the shingles? Yes. The poplar plywood is untreated and can be glued, painted, coloured, stained or oiled.

Are the shingles suitable for outdoor use? In their natural form, for indoor use only. For outdoor use, the wood needs to be treated, for example by oiling it.

Why do the edges have a brown rim? That's the typical mark left by the laser cut. It gives smooth edges and picks out every single shingle on the finished roof.

Why don't all the shingles look the same? Wood is a purely natural material: shade, grain and small knots vary. That's exactly what gives your roof its lively, natural character.

How do I attach the shingles? Glue them on row by row, overlapping – from the bottom up, just like a real shingle roof.

In the end, it's not about plywood and millimetres. It's about the moment you fit the last shingle, step back – and your little roof looks as if a carpenter had laid it. Simply choose the size and quantity that suit your project.
