The nativity stable is on the table and the walls are done. Only the roof is missing. With these Rhön-shape wooden shingles, you can roof nativity scenes, model houses and miniature buildings shingle by shingle. In the end, the little roof looks just like the real thing. They are precisely laser-cut from 3 mm poplar plywood. That makes them ready for your next craft project.

What changes for you

  • Your model roof looks genuinely hand-built. Each roof shingle is precisely laser-cut in the classic Rhön shape and fits neatly against the next.
  • You'll find the right size for every project. There are 28 sizes to choose from, from 15 mm x 7.5 mm to 150 mm x 75 mm. They suit everything from a delicate nativity scene to a larger model house.
  • You can get started straight away and design freely. The untreated wood can be painted, decorated with stickers, coated or oiled, whatever suits your project.
  • You can glue the shingles without any finishing work. The laser-cut edges are smooth. Nothing needs sanding or trimming.
  • You order exactly the quantity you need. Thanks to the quantity selection, you won't have lots left over.

Why these wooden shingles make a difference

A roof made of individual shingles makes a real difference to a model. A bare shell turns into a house with its own look that people want to study. Think of building a nativity scene during Advent, a model house on the windowsill or a village scene under the Christmas tree. The fine texture of the Rhön shingles gives your piece the depth that ready-made roofs lack. And because you lay each row yourself, the finished roof clearly shows your own work.

Material & finish

The shingles are made of poplar plywood approx. 3 mm thick. It is light, keeps its shape and is easy to glue. Each cutout is precisely laser-cut in our own production in Pößneck after you order. The edges are smooth and show the typical brown laser edge. It gives the roof a slightly rustic look. The wood is untreated, not varnished or glazed. That way it takes paint, stain or oil well. Wood is a natural material. Brightness and grain vary slightly from shingle to shingle, and small knots are normal. This makes every roof one of a kind and is not a defect.

How to use the shingles

  • Building a nativity scene during Advent: you roof the stable row by row. The nativity scene gets a lovingly built look that recalls real craftsmanship.
  • In model making: houses, mills or whole village scenes look more detailed and closer to the original with a shingle roof.
  • Our tip for the Christmas season: use them to roof a Christmas pyramid. It's a popular Christmas craft project that gives the pyramid a look all of its own.
  • For decorating and painting: you can design each shingle with paint or stain. Use them as decoration, table scatter or a design detail for all kinds of craft work.
  • In workshops, schools or craft groups: with the size and quantity selection, you order exactly the material your group project needs. No offcuts and no cutting to size.

Good to know about Rhön shingles

The Rhön shape goes back to the traditional wooden shingle. In the Rhön and other low mountain ranges, it was used to cover roofs and the weather sides of houses. The rounded shape drains rainwater well. For you, this means your miniature roof follows a real historical model. That makes it look authentic, whether on a nativity scene or a half-timbered model.

Care & durability

There isn't much you need to do. Indoors, you can leave the shingles untreated, and the natural wood tone will last a long time. If your piece is going outside, treat the wood first, for example by oiling it. That way it can stand up to wind and weather. Don't expose the untreated wood to constant moisture.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the shingles outdoors? In their natural state, they are only suitable for indoor use. For outdoor use, you'll need to treat the wood, for example by oiling it.

Can the shingles be painted or decorated? Yes. The wood is untreated. You can decorate it, paint it, oil it or work on it however you like.

Why don't all the shingles look the same? Wood is a natural material. Brightness and grain vary, and small knots are normal. These features make every piece one of a kind.

What's the brown border on the edges? The shingles are laser-cut. This creates smooth edges with the typical brown laser edge. It is a feature of the process and gives the roof a warm tone.

What matters most isn't plywood or cut shape. It's the moment you place the last shingle and take a step back. Your little roof is finished in front of you. Just choose the size and quantity that suit your project.
