The nativity stable is standing and the little house is built. Only the roof still looks bare. With these honeycomb shingles made of 3 mm poplar plywood, you cover it row by row. Bit by bit, the shell turns into a miniature roof that looks as if a real roofer had done it. Shingles for model making, made for your next project. They come in 28 sizes, from tiny scale to large decorative format.

What changes for you

  • Your model roof gets an even, authentic shingle pattern. Every shingle is precisely laser-cut, so all cutouts are exactly the same.
  • You'll find the right size for every project, from a small nativity scene to a large Christmas pyramid. There are 28 sizes to choose from, ranging from 15 mm x 7.5 mm to 150 mm x 75 mm.
  • You design freely, just as you imagine it. The untreated poplar wood can be glued, painted, coated or oiled, exactly as your model needs.
  • You order exactly the quantity you really need. Thanks to the size and quantity options, you're not left with unnecessary leftovers.

Why these wooden shingles make a real difference

A roof often decides whether a model looks like a quick craft job or like loving handiwork. If you lay the honeycomb shingles offset, an even scale pattern builds up row by row. This works on a Christmas nativity scene just as well as on a half-timbered house on the sideboard. Instead of cutting out single tiles by hand, you can focus on the fun part: designing.

Material & finish

The shingles are made of light poplar plywood, approx. 3 mm thick. It is lightweight, keeps its shape and is easy to work with. Laser cutting gives smooth edges with the typical brown rim. This rim also adds natural shading to the little roof. The wood is untreated, neither varnished nor glazed. That's why it takes paint, stain or oil well. As a purely natural material, it shows different shades, fine textures and occasional small knots. This makes every piece unique. The shingles are made to order in our own production in Pößneck, Thuringia.

How to use the shingles

  • Building a nativity scene in Advent: you cover the stable row by row with the small roof shingles. The nativity scene then looks as if it had been in the family for generations.
  • In model making: houses, mills or towers get a true-to-scale roof with the honeycomb shingles. It instantly gives the model depth and character.
  • On a Christmas pyramid: use the cutouts as small-scale roof tiles, and the pyramid roof gets a handcrafted look. Not just at Christmas time.
  • For decorating and embellishing: paint the honeycombs one by one, or arrange them as a pattern on boxes, picture frames and signs. Plain surfaces get a textured finish.
  • For shop window and store displays: miniature houses with tiled roofs bring themed displays in your shop to life. They are quick to set up and can be reused season after season.

Good to know about honeycomb roofing

The honeycomb shape is no coincidence. Hexagonal patterns are known from traditional crafts, for example slate roofs and façades. There, the hexagons fit together closely and evenly. That's exactly why these shingles look so convincing in model making. Your miniature roof copies a pattern that really exists on full-size buildings.

Care & durability

There isn't much you need to do. In their natural state, the shingles are meant for indoor use and stay looking good there for a long time. If your project is going outdoors, such as a nativity scene by the front door, treat the wood first, for example with oil. Keep the untreated wood away from constant moisture. Then you'll enjoy your work for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paint the shingles or glue things to them? Yes. The poplar wood is untreated and can be glued, coated, painted or oiled.

Are the shingles suitable for outdoor use? In their natural state, they are for indoor use only. For outdoor use, you need to treat the wood first, for example by oiling it.

Why do the edges have a brown rim? This is the typical mark left by laser cutting. The edges are smooth. The dark rim comes from the laser and emphasises the shingle look.

Do all shingles look exactly the same? The shape is precisely laser-cut and always identical. The wood itself is a natural material. Shade and grain vary, and small knots are normal. Every piece is unique.

Are the shingles made in advance? No. They are precisely laser-cut after you order, in the size and quantity you choose.

Plywood and a honeycomb cut are only the starting point. The best part is the moment you lay the last row and step back. Suddenly your model has a proper roof over its head. Simply choose the size and quantity that suit your project.
