Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong. An afternoon at the craft table. Your paints are ready, but you still need the right motif for your nautical wall picture. This HDF compass with an engraved compass rose is made for exactly that. It is a smoothly laser-cut cutout with the outlines already marked. All you need to do is reach for a brush or some glue. That's how an idea about seafaring and navigation becomes a finished piece of decoration.
What changes for you
- You can start painting straight away without sketching first. The compass rose and outlines are already engraved into the board.
- You get clean results even on fine details. The cutout is laser-cut and has a smooth edge with no frayed spots.
- You can design it just the way you imagine it. The HDF is untreated, so you can cover it, paint it or colour it in.
- You'll find the right size for every project – from small table scatter pieces to large wall motifs. Choose from 5 to 50 cm in 1 cm steps.
- Planning group projects or larger decorations is easy. The compass is available singly or in sets of 10, 25, 50 and 100.
Why this HDF compass makes a difference in everyday use
A good craft motif takes the tedious prep work off your hands. You can go straight to the fun part. Instead of cutting out templates and tracing lines, you hold a ready laser-cut blank. It is just waiting for your design. A free afternoon turns into something you can see – on the wall, on a door sign or on a handmade gift.
Material & finish
The compass is laser-cut from 3 mm thick HDF/MDF fibreboard. This gives it smooth edges. It is easy to work with and needs no sanding. The surface is untreated, neither varnished nor glazed. That's why paint and glue stick to it well. Every cutout is made in Bütic's own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. Good to know: high-density fibreboard is made of pressed wood fibres and always shows slight variations. Some fibres are lighter, some darker, and now and then there are small impurities. This makes every piece unique. It is not a flaw. HDF is a fibreboard like MDF, only more densely compressed. This makes it harder, and it stays stable even when thin.

How to use the compass
- Crafting with children: every child paints their own compass. In the end, a whole colourful fleet of explorers hangs on the wall.
- For nautical decoration: glue the compass rose onto driftwood, a wall picture or a door sign. It brings a bit of seafaring into your home.
- As a personal gift: painted, labelled and decorated, the cutout becomes a reminder of a seaside holiday. Or it becomes a good-luck charm for the next chapter of life.
- In model making: the compass works well as a detail in dioramas or maritime scenes. Thanks to the fine engraving, it is easy to recognise even in small sizes.
- In cafés, shops or at the weekly market: large cutouts up to 50 cm set a clear nautical theme in window or counter displays. They are quick to put up and last a long time.
Good to know about the compass rose
For centuries, the compass rose has decorated nautical charts and compasses. On historical maps, north was often highlighted with special artistry. As a symbol of direction and wanderlust, the compass suits more than nautical decor. It also fits occasions like farewells, moving house or starting school – wherever someone is setting a new course.
Care & durability
There's not much to do. Store the untreated cutout in a dry place and avoid prolonged moisture. This keeps the board stable and the engraving clearly visible. A coat of paint or a sealant of your choice makes the surface more durable.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the compass or stick things on it? Yes. The HDF comes in its natural state, neither varnished nor glazed. Paint and glue stick well to the surface.
Do all cutouts look exactly the same? The shape and engraving are identical. The fibreboard itself shows natural variations, though. Fibres can vary in shade and show small impurities. This makes each piece unique.
How wide is the compass at a given height? For reference: at 10 cm high, it is 9 cm wide. The proportions stay the same across all sizes.
Do I need to finish the edges? No. The cutout is laser-cut, so it has a smooth edge. You can start decorating straight away.
This compass-shaped fibreboard is only the starting point. The goal is your own design hanging on the wall and bringing a bit of wanderlust into the room. Just choose your size – single or in a set – and get started.
