Why this nativity figure makes a difference in everyday life
A nativity scene you made yourself tells more than any shop-bought one. It reminds you of crafting hours together and often grows over the years. The praying Mary is the calm centre of your Holy Night. Place her as a simple silhouette in the window or lovingly painted on the festive table. A cutout becomes a piece of Christmas you can unpack again every year.
Material & finish
The figure is made from 3 mm thick HDF/MDF fibreboard. It is lasered in our own production at Bütic in Pößneck, Thuringia. The edges are smooth and the finish is clean, so you can start creating straight away. The board is untreated, neither varnished nor stained. Paint, glue and varnish adhere well, and you decide on the look yourself. As compressed wood fibre, HDF always shows varying textures. Some fibres are lighter, some darker, and there may be small irregularities. This makes each figure unique and is not a defect. HDF is a fibreboard like MDF, just more densely compressed. This makes it harder, and it stays stable even when thin.

How to use the praying Mary
- Building a nativity scene as a family: everyone paints their own figure. On Christmas Eve, a nativity scene stands in the living room that everyone helped to make.
- On the windowsill during Advent: the silhouette of the praying Mary stands out sharply in the evening light. You can see it from inside and outside.
- In a craft class, nursery or church group: with sets of 10 or more, every child gets their own figure to paint and decorate. No time-consuming preparation needed.
- For model making or dioramas: the flat 3 mm shape fits into your own scenes of the Holy Night.
- For cafés, shops or market stalls: use it in your Christmas window and counter displays. Larger sizes are easy to see. Sets let you dress several areas quickly.
Good to know about the praying Mary
Mary with her hands folded in prayer has been part of the nativity scene for centuries. She is the calm centre beside the Child and Joseph. The tradition of nativity scenes goes back to Francis of Assisi. In 1223 he had the Christmas story re-enacted as a scene for the first time. That is why the praying Mary is the obvious first figure if you want to build your own nativity scene or add to it year after year.
Care & durability
There is not much you need to do. Store the figure in a dry place and keep it away from constant moisture, as the HDF is untreated. A dry cloth is all you need for dusting. That way your Christmas decoration stays ready to use for many years.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the figure or stick things on it? Yes. The HDF is untreated and can be painted, decorated and have things stuck on it. It is ideal for crafting with children or for your own design ideas.
How wide is the figure at the height I choose? The proportions stay the same. At a height of 10 cm, the width is 7.5 cm. You can use this as a guide for all sizes.
Why does the surface look slightly different on each figure? HDF is made of pressed wood fibres. These vary in shade and can show small impurities. This is typical of the material and makes every figure unique.
Are the edges ready for crafting? Yes. The figure is laser-cut and has smooth edges. You do not need to sand or finish them.
This MDF cutout is really about one evening. It is the evening when your own nativity scene stands in candlelight for the first time. And everyone knows they helped paint it. Just choose your size and quantity. You design the rest.
