Advent is beginning, and this year you'd like to create your own nativity scene. Perhaps you have a family craft afternoon in mind, a children's church group or a festively decorated shop window. This nativity figure of Mary praying, made from HDF, is just right for it. It is a cleanly lasered motif of the Holy Night. You can paint it, decorate it or leave it natural, just as you like. Step by step, you create Christmas decorations that truly show your own style.

What changes for you

  • You design your nativity scene in exactly the size you want. The figure can be ordered in heights from 5 cm to 50 cm in 1 cm steps.
  • You can start painting and decorating right away, with no sanding needed. The edges are lasered and smooth, and the surface is untreated.
  • Your craft project with a group, class or customers is easy to plan. You can get the praying Mary singly or in sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100.
  • Your Christmas decorations look calm and understated. Even unpainted, the natural wood fibre material has a light, even surface with a soft texture.

Why this nativity figure makes a difference in everyday life

Shop-bought nativity figures look the same everywhere. A figure you design yourself tells your own story. On the windowsill, under the Christmas tree or as part of a large nativity scene: the praying Mary brings the Holy Night into your home, exactly as you imagine it. And while you craft, you get what Advent is all about. Quiet moments together at the table.

Material & finish

The figure is laser-cut from 3 mm HDF/MDF fibreboard and made in Bütic's own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. Laser cutting gives smooth edges and a clean outline. You get a neatly finished piece that is easy to work with. The board is untreated, so it is neither varnished nor glazed. Paint, glue and decorating materials stick directly to the surface. Good to know: HDF boards are made of pressed wood fibres and always show slightly different textures. Some fibres are lighter, and small irregularities can occur. This is exactly what makes each figure a one-off. HDF is a fibreboard like MDF, only more densely compressed. This makes it harder, and it stays stable even when thin.

How to use the nativity figure

  • At an Advent craft afternoon: everyone paints their own Mary. In the end, there is a nativity scene on the table that the whole family has helped to make.
  • On the windowsill: stand the figure up in its natural finish or painted. Then a little bit of Christmas greets you even from outside.
  • In model making: Mary completes your nativity or winter landscape to the right scale. As you choose the height freely, she fits in exactly.
  • In nurseries, schools or parishes: with a set of 10, 25, 50 or 100 figures, the Christmas project is ready for the whole group. Every child takes their own piece home.
  • In the shop window or on the counter: arrange several figures in graduated sizes. Your Christmas display looks well thought out, without much effort to set up.

Good to know about the praying Mary

The tradition of the Christmas crib goes back to Francis of Assisi. In 1223, he had the Holy Night re-enacted as a scene for the first time. Since then, the figure of Mary has been at the heart of every nativity scene. That is why the praying Mary works not only as a single Christmas decoration. Above all, it is a starting point for your own nativity scene that grows over the years.

Care & durability

There is not much you need to do. Store the untreated figure in a dry place and protect it from constant moisture. Then it keeps its shape and is ready to use for many Christmases. A dry cloth is all you need for dusting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paint the figure straight away? Yes. The HDF is untreated and takes paint, glue and decorating materials directly. You can paint Mary, decorate her or use her in her natural state.

Do I need to sand the edges? No. The figure is laser-cut, so it has smooth edges. You can start creating right away.

How wide is the figure at the height I choose? As a reference: at a height of 10 cm, the width is 7.5 cm. The proportions stay the same for all sizes.

Why do the figures look slightly different? HDF boards are made of pressed wood fibres. These can vary in lightness and show small irregularities. This is typical of the material and makes every piece one of a kind.

This is about more than a wood fibre figure. It is about the moment your home-made nativity scene stands on the windowsill for the first time. And Christmas becomes a little more your own. Just choose your size and get started.
