Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong.Advent is starting, and the windowsill is still waiting for its Christmas decorations. This year you'd like something homemade that really suits your home. This nativity figure of Joseph praying, made from HDF, is made for exactly that and for your craft ideas. It's a cleanly laser-cut silhouette in a natural finish. You can paint it, decorate it or simply display it as it is. Piece by piece, a simple cutout becomes your very own nativity scene.
What changes for you
- You can design the figure just the way you like. The HDF is untreated, so you can prime it, paint it or stick things onto it.
- You can work comfortably with no extra finishing. That's thanks to the smooth, laser-cut edges of the 3 mm material.
- You'll find exactly the right size for your nativity scene, your window or your shop window. You can choose any height from 5 to 50 cm in 1 cm steps.
- You can also kit out craft groups, school classes or shop displays with no extra effort. Sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100 are available.
- You get clean, careful workmanship made in Germany. Every cutout comes from Bütic's own production in Pößneck, Thuringia.
Why this nativity figure makes a difference in everyday life
You can buy ready-made Christmas decorations anywhere. But a figure you've designed yourself tells its own story. The praying Joseph brings calm and meaning to your nativity scene. Leave it in its natural fibre tone or paint it in colour. You choose the size yourself. So the figure matches the height of your existing nativity set and doesn't look out of scale.
Material & finish
The figure is made from 3 mm HDF/MDF fibreboard. It's a dense, dimensionally stable material that works well for crafting, painting and decorating. Laser cutting gives smooth edges that don't fray or splinter. The board is untreated, so it's neither varnished nor glazed. Paint, glue and decorations stick directly to the surface. Good to know: pressed wood fibres always show different textures. Some fibres are lighter, some darker, and there are occasionally small impurities. This makes each piece unique and is not a flaw. HDF is a fibreboard like MDF, just more densely compressed. This makes it harder, and it stays sturdy even when thin.

How to use the praying Joseph
- In the nativity scene: you place Joseph next to Mary and the Child. Every evening, your nativity scene recalls the Holy Night.
- Crafting with children: each child paints their own figure. At the end, they take home a piece of homemade Christmas decoration.
- On the windowsill or shelf: left natural or painted in colour, the silhouette fits quietly into your Advent decorations.
- In the window of a bakery, café or shop: with a larger set, you can decorate several windows in the same style. There's no need to source each figure separately.
- In model making: the flat 3 mm figure fits into dioramas and nativity landscapes without adding bulk.
Good to know about Praying Joseph
The tradition of re-enacting the Christmas story with figures goes back to Francis of Assisi. In 1223 he created one of the first nativity scenes. Since then, Joseph has been a fixed part of every nativity scene. He is the quiet protector of the Holy Family. So the praying Joseph is more than a craft motif. He is a piece of tradition that you carry on in your own nativity scene.
Care & durability
There isn't much you need to do. Store the figure somewhere dry and avoid long-term damp, as the fibreboard is untreated. That way it keeps its shape and will see you through many Advents. Once painted or varnished, the surface has extra protection.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the figure or stick things onto it? Yes. The HDF is untreated and comes in a natural finish. Paint, glue and decorations stick directly to the surface.
How wide is the figure at the height I choose? As a guide: at a height of 10 cm, the width is 5 cm. The proportions stay the same across all sizes.
Why don't all the surfaces look the same? HDF boards are made from pressed wood fibres. These can vary in shade and may show small specks. This texture makes every figure unique.
Is the figure available in larger quantities? Yes. As well as single pieces, you can order sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100. They're ideal for craft groups, schools or shop displays.
A fibreboard cutout is only the beginning. Picture the evening when your nativity scene is complete and the figure you designed stands in the candlelight. Just choose your size – single or in a set – and start creating.
