Why this St Nicholas boot makes a difference
Home-made Christmas decorations say more than any shop-bought figure. Each boot shows the hand of the person who painted it. In the window, on the door or as part of an Advent calendar, it creates that calm, familiar pre-Christmas view. And the crafting itself creates the moments you remember later. On a shop counter or in a shop window, hand-decorated pieces also feel more personal than mass-produced ones.
Material & finish
The boot is made of 3 mm MDF or HDF. These are high-density fibreboards made from pressed wood fibres. The material is untreated, neither varnished nor glazed. That's why it takes paint, glue and oil well. Laser cutting leaves the typical brown edge. It frames the shape and gives a clean, even outline. Wood fibres naturally vary in shade and can show small irregularities. This makes every piece unique and is not a defect.

Good to know about the St Nicholas boot
On the evening of 5 December, people put boots or shoes outside the door. This custom goes back to the legend of St Nicholas of Myra. He is said to have secretly given gifts to people in need. That's why the boot is still the symbol of St Nicholas' Day today. As a shape you decorate yourself, it suits Advent calendars, window decorations and small gifts alike.
Care & durability
There's not much you need to do. Store the untreated cutout in a dry place and keep it away from constant moisture. This keeps the surface smooth and ready for paint. Once painted or oiled, your decoration will last for many Advent seasons.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the boot or glue things onto it? Yes. The MDF/HDF comes in its natural state and can be painted, oiled, glued on or decorated in other ways.
Why do the edges have a brown rim? The boot is laser-cut. This creates the typical brown rim with smooth, clean edges.
How tall is the boot at a given width? As a reference: at 10 cm wide, the height is approx. 9 cm. The proportions stay the same for all sizes.
Why do the cutouts look slightly different? Wood is a purely natural material. The pressed fibres vary in shade and can show small blemishes. This makes every piece unique.
A wooden cutout is only the starting point. What counts is the afternoon at the kitchen table spent painting, gluing and laughing. And the decoration that goes back in the window every year. Simply choose your width and quantity, and Advent can begin.
