Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong. An evening at the craft table. Paints and ribbons are ready. Only the right base shape is still missing. This MDF wooden square with a hole at the top centre is made for your next craft project. It has a smooth, untreated surface. You can paint it, decorate it with stickers or write on it. At the end, you simply thread a ribbon through the hole. A plain wooden shape becomes a tag, a sign or a small gift that you have designed yourself.
What changes for you
- You can start straight away, with no sanding or drilling. The square is laser-cut and has smooth edges. The 3 mm hanging hole is already at the top centre.
- Your paints, varnishes and glues hold well, because the HDF is untreated and takes colour easily. Paint it, oil it or cover it, just as you like.
- You will find the right size for every project. You choose the width from 3 to 50 cm in 1 cm steps. That covers everything from a small gift tag to a large decorative sign.
- Your tags look soft and finished. The corners are rounded with a 5 mm radius. Nothing looks sharp-edged or unfinished.
- Crafting in a larger group stays relaxed, for example with children. Sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100 pieces mean everyone has their own square.
Why this wooden square makes a difference day to day
With a ready-made base shape, your project starts with the fun part: designing. Instead of preparing cutouts, you go straight to painting, lettering or decorating. At the end, a finished piece hangs from the ribbon and everything matches. Making Christmas decorations with the family? Or matching tags for the shop counter? The clear square shape keeps any design theme calm and tidy.
Material & finish
The square is made from 3 mm thick HDF. It is laser-cut in our own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. The laser cut gives smooth edges and leaves the typical brown rim. This forms a fine, subtle frame around your finished design. Fibreboard is made from pressed wood fibres. It naturally shows fibres in lighter and darker shades and may have small blemishes. This makes every piece one of a kind and is not a defect. The surface is untreated, neither varnished nor glazed. You decide how it should look. HDF is a fibreboard like MDF, only more densely compressed. This makes it harder, and it stays stable even when thin.

How to use the wooden square
- Christmas crafts with children: each child paints their own square and threads a ribbon through the hole. Soon the tree is full of homemade decorations that everyone is proud of.
- For an advent calendar: number 24 small squares and tie them to little bags or parcels. All the tags look the same and are made from the same material.
- Making money gifts: write on the square, attach the notes creatively and hand it over on a ribbon. A plain envelope becomes a lovingly made gift.
- In a café or at a market stall: use them as labelled hanging signs for offers or prices. They share one format, are quick to swap and look tidy.
- As gift tags for birthdays, Mother's Day or Father's Day: add a name, thread a ribbon through, and the parcel feels personal before it is even unwrapped.
Good to know about MDF and HDF
HDF stands for high-density fibreboard. Wood fibres are pressed so finely that they form an even board with no knots and no running grain. That is exactly why the material is so popular for crafts. Paints and motifs show up crisply on the flat surface, and no wood grain gets in the way.
Care & durability
There is not much you need to do. Keep the untreated square dry and away from constant moisture, and it will keep its shape for a long time. When you paint, oil or varnish it, you seal the surface at the same time. That way your design stays looking good for longer.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the square or stick things on it? Yes. The HDF is untreated and can be painted, oiled, varnished or covered. Paint adheres well to the natural surface.
What is the hole for? The hole is 3 mm in diameter and sits at the top centre. You can thread a ribbon, string or a small hook through it to hang the square up.
Why do the edges have a brown rim? The square is laser-cut. This creates the typical brown rim on the cut edges. It is a feature of the process, which also gives smooth edges.
Do all the squares look exactly the same? The shape is identical. However, the fibreboard naturally shows fibres of different shades and may have small impurities. This is typical of the material and makes every piece unique.
Are the width and height the same? Yes. If you choose a width of 10 cm, for example, the height is also 10 cm.
Turn an HDF square into a gift tag you designed yourself and tie it to a present. Or let the children paint their own pieces and hang them proudly on the tree. Just choose the size and quantity, and get started.
