Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong. The kitchen table is covered with paints, brushes and craft glue. The children are waiting impatiently. All that's missing is a base shape to work on. This MDF wooden square with 2 holes is made for exactly that. It gives you a smooth, untreated surface to paint, decorate or write on. Thanks to the two holes, your finished piece can hang where everyone can see it. A plain wooden shape becomes a door sign, a hanging tag or a piece of homemade Christmas decoration.
What changes for you
- You can hang up your finished pieces straight away, without drilling. The two 3 mm holes already sit side by side in the corners. Ribbon or cord slips right through.
- Your colours and designs show up clearly on the untreated MDF surface. It takes acrylic paint, varnish, napkin decoupage or lettering without any pre-treatment.
- You can work without worry, even when crafting with children. The edges are laser-cut and smooth. The corners are gently rounded with a 5 mm radius.
- You'll find the right size for every project. Choose any width from 3 to 50 cm in 1 cm steps – from a small gift tag to a large wall sign.
- You can plan bigger projects without reordering. Besides single pieces, there are sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100.
Why this MDF square makes a difference in everyday life
Many craft ideas don't fail because of the idea, but because of the cutting. Sawing, sanding, drilling holes – and the afternoon is over before you've picked up a brush. With a ready laser-cut shape, you go straight to the fun part. Whether it's a garland in the children's room, a sign at your market stall or homemade tags for a celebration – you get an even, neat result. It looks planned rather than accidental.
Material & finish
The square is made from 3 mm HDF and laser-cut in Bütic's own production in Pößneck. This gives it smooth edges with the typical brown laser edge. It's a sign of this way of making things. When painting, you can paint over it or leave it as a frame on purpose. The board is untreated, so it isn't varnished or glazed. You decide yourself whether to paint it, oil it or cover it. As a pressed wood fibre board, each piece has its own texture. Some fibres are lighter, some darker, and small irregularities can occur. This isn't a flaw. It makes every piece one of a kind. HDF is a fibreboard like MDF, only more densely compressed. This makes it harder and keeps it stable even when thin.

How to use the MDF square
- For a DIY advent calendar: paint on the numbers 1 to 24 and thread cord through the holes. Your calendar chain is ready to hang and can be used again every year.
- When crafting with children: each child designs their own door sign with their name. By evening it hangs proudly on the bedroom door.
- For DIY Christmas decorations: paint several squares, thread them onto a ribbon and hang them as a garland along the windowsill. The room instantly feels more festive.
- For money gifts or a homemade Mother's Day present: write on the square and attach a banknote or photo. Then thread a bow through the holes. You get a personal tag instead of an anonymous envelope.
- In a shop, café or at the weekly market: write prices or variety names on the squares and hang them at the counter. Your display and range look organised at a glance. And signs can be swapped in minutes.
Good to know about MDF and HDF
HDF is made from finely pressed wood fibres. Unlike solid wood, it has no knots and no grain direction. For you, this means an even surface throughout. Paint covers reliably, and laser cutting creates precise, clean outlines. That's exactly why HDF is the classic craft wood for painting and lettering.
Care & durability
There isn't much you need to do. Store the untreated HDF somewhere dry and protect it from constant moisture. Then it will keep its smooth surface for a long time. If your decoration is going to hang outdoors, it's best to seal the surface with paint or varnish. That way it stays looking good in wind and weather.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the square straight away? Yes. The HDF is untreated and takes paint, varnish, oil or glue without any preparation. Covering it with paper and napkin decoupage work well too.
What are the two holes for? The two holes, each 3 mm in diameter, sit side by side in the corners. They're ideal for threading cord, ribbon or wire, so the square hangs straight and securely.
Why does the edge have a brown border? The square is laser-cut, which creates the typical brown laser edge. It also gives you smooth edges. You can paint over it or use it as a natural frame.
Do all pieces look exactly the same? The shape and dimensions are identical. However, the fibre texture varies slightly in brightness and may show small irregularities. This is a property of fibreboard and makes every piece unique.
Is the square really square? Yes. Width and height are always the same. If you choose a width of 10 cm, for example, the height is also 10 cm.
What matters is the moment your own sign hangs on the door. The garland decorates the window. And someone asks: “Did you make that yourself?” Just choose your width and quantity – and get started.
