Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong. This year you want to make your own Advent calendar. The children want to join in. All you need now is the right blank to paint and hang up. This MDF wooden square with a hole in the top right corner is made for exactly that: thread a ribbon through, decorate it, hang it up. A plain surface becomes a calendar door, a tag or a small sign in your own handwriting.
What changes for you
- You can hang up your finished piece straight away, without drilling. The ready-made 3 mm hole in the top right corner takes care of that.
- You can paint, glue or write on the surface straight away. The HDF is untreated and takes paint, glue or oil well.
- Your result looks clean and precise. The laser-cut edges are smooth and the corners are gently rounded with a 5 mm radius. Nothing frays, nothing pokes.
- You'll find the right size for every project. The square is available in widths from 3 cm to 50 cm in 1 cm steps.
- Crafting with children is more relaxed when everyone starts from the same even blank. And every child still creates their own one-of-a-kind piece.
Why this MDF square makes a difference in everyday life
Whether you're making Christmas decorations, wrapping gifts of money or making name tags for a party: with a ready-made cutout, you go straight to the fun part – decorating. You skip sawing, sanding and drilling. And the result still looks neat and consistent. A spontaneous craft idea at the kitchen table quickly becomes something you'll want to give away or hang up.
Material & finish
The square is made of 3 mm thick HDF and is laser-cut in our own production in Pößneck. The laser cut gives smooth edges and leaves the typical brown rim. This is a characteristic feature that often frames finished pieces nicely. The surface is untreated, not varnished or glazed. You decide whether to paint it, glue things on, coat it or oil it. As a fibreboard made of pressed wood fibres, the material always shows slightly varying textures. Fibres can differ in shade and show small irregularities. This makes each piece unique and is not a flaw. HDF is a fibreboard like MDF, only more densely compressed. This makes it harder, and it stays stable even when thin.

How to use the MDF square
- Making an Advent calendar: number 24 small squares and thread a ribbon through each hole. Within an hour, your calendar is hanging on the rail.
- Crafting with children: every child paints their own square. At the end, they take home a tag they're proud of.
- For gifts of money: attach a note, write a message, tie on a ribbon. An envelope becomes a personally decorated gift.
- As Christmas decorations: painted with motifs or lettered, the squares decorate branches, windows or presents – year after year.
- In a café, at the market or at a buffet: use them as hanging signs for varieties and prices. They give you neat, uniform labelling. And you can quickly relabel them when needed.
Good to know about MDF and HDF
HDF stands for high-density fibreboard. It is made of finely pressed wood fibres, so it has no knots and no continuous grain. This even, fine surface is why it is so popular for painting and gluing. Paint covers evenly and lines stay clean. For craft projects where your design should take centre stage, that is a real advantage.
Care & durability
There is not much you need to do. As the HDF is untreated, it is best to store it somewhere dry and protect it from constant moisture. With a coat of paint or a sealant of your choice, your finished piece will look good for a long time.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the square straight away? Yes. The surface is untreated, not varnished or glazed. You can paint, glue, coat or oil it.
Where exactly is the hole and how big is it? The hole has a diameter of 3 mm and sits in the top right corner. It's ideal for ribbons, cords or thin hooks.
Why is the edge brown? The square is laser-cut. The brown edge is typical of this clean cutting process and is part of the product.
Do all squares look exactly the same? The shape is exactly the same. However, the fibre structure can vary in shade and show small irregularities. This is typical of the material and makes every piece unique.
Is the height always the same as the width? Yes, it's a square. If you choose a width of 10 cm, for example, the height is also 10 cm.
A wooden cutout with a hole is only the starting point. What counts is the afternoon when a few plain squares become an Advent calendar, a gift tag or a small work of art by your children. Just choose your size and quantity – and get started.
