Why this MDF cutout makes a difference in everyday life
A ready-cut shape takes care of the hardest part for you: the sawing. You can focus on the fun part – choosing colours, decorating and designing. A quiet afternoon turns into something you can give away, hang up or add to your decorations. You don't need any tools or prior experience.
Material & finish
The rat is laser-cut from 3 mm MDF or HDF (high-density fibreboard). This gives it the typical brown edge, which creates a clear outline. The surface is untreated – neither varnished nor glazed. That's why it takes paint, glue or oil well. Wood fibre is a natural material. The boards show lighter and darker patterns and may have small blemishes. This makes every piece one of a kind. Every cutout is made in our own production in Pößneck, Thuringia, Germany, with clean, careful finishing.

How to use the MDF rat
- Crafting with children at the kitchen table: each child paints their own rat. At the end, a colourful parade hangs in the window.
- For Halloween or autumn decorations: place a few rats painted in dark colours on the windowsill. Your home is decorated for the season in just a few steps.
- As a gift for rat lovers: add a name and the cutout becomes a lovingly made door sign for the cage or a child's bedroom.
- For model making: the small sizes from 3 cm fit into dioramas and scenes as a detail. The 1 cm steps help you get the scale right.
- For pet shops, vet practices or club stands: with a set of 25, 50 or 100, you can decorate your counter or shop window in a uniform look. Or hand out the blanks to children as a craft activity.
Good to know about the rat
In the Chinese zodiac, the rat is the first of the twelve signs. It traditionally stands for cleverness and skill. This makes the cutout a good base for greetings cards, gift tags or small presents. They're ideal for anyone born in the Year of the Rat – or anyone who simply has a soft spot for these clever animals.
Care & durability
There's not much you need to do. Store the untreated cutout in a dry place and protect it from lasting moisture. This keeps the surface smooth so it takes paint cleanly. Once painted or oiled, your shape will last for a long time.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint or decorate the rat? Yes. The MDF/HDF is untreated. You can paint it, stick things on it or oil it – whatever your idea is.
Why does the cutout have a brown edge? The rat is laser-cut. This creates the typical brown edge along the sides. It's part of the process and gives a clear, smooth outline.
How tall is the rat at a given width? As a guide: at a width of 10 cm, the height is 9 cm. Other sizes scale proportionally.
Do all cutouts look exactly the same? The shape is identical, the surface isn't. HDF is made from pressed wood fibres. These can vary in shade and show small blemishes. This isn't a fault. It makes every piece unique.
Is the wood treated? No. The cutout comes in its natural state – neither varnished nor glazed. So it's ready for you to decorate straight away.
A wooden cutout is just the start. What counts is the moment your painted rat sits on the shelf and you think: I made that – and it turned out just right. Simply choose your width and quantity. The rest happens at your craft table.
