Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong. The Advent wreath is up and the craft box is open. But you still need a shape that turns paint, paper and ideas into something finished. This MDF rectangle with a square cut-out is made for exactly that. It's a laser-cut wooden cutout in your choice of width from 6 to 50 cm. It comes untreated and ready for whatever you have in mind. Whether it's a door sign, a photo frame idea or Christmas decorations with children, you can start straight away. No sawing needed.
What changes for you
- You get exactly the size your project needs. The width can be chosen from 6 to 50 cm in 1 cm steps.
- Your paints, varnishes and oils will hold well. The HDF is untreated, so it is neither varnished nor glazed.
- You can carry on without sanding. The laser-cut edges are smooth and cleanly finished.
- Your decoration looks planned rather than pieced together. The square cut-out gives the rectangle a clear, frame-like shape from the start.
- You can plan with confidence. The fixed 2:1 ratio means you always know the height.
Why this MDF rectangle makes a difference day to day
A good blank takes care of the most tedious part for you: the cutting. You sit down and reach for a brush, glue or napkin decoupage. Soon you have a result you can be proud of. This matters especially when crafting with children. The shape is already right and the edges are smooth. So attention stays on the creative part, not on the tools.
Material & finish
The rectangle is made from 3 mm thick HDF and is laser cut. That is why it has the typical brown edge you find on every laser-cut piece. The surface is left natural. You can glue things onto it, paint it, oil it or decorate it in other ways, just as your project needs. Every cutout is made in Bütic's own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. Wood is a purely natural material. Small differences in texture are normal, and they make every piece one of a kind. HDF is a fibreboard like MDF, only more densely compressed. This makes it harder, and it stays stable even when thin.

How to use the MDF rectangle
- Christmas crafts with children: each child paints their own rectangle. In the end, home-made Christmas decorations hang in the window, and everyone is proud of them.
- For money gifts: tuck the note into the square cut-out or stick it behind. An envelope becomes a small work of art to hand over.
- As a frame idea: place a photo or a hand-made card behind the cut-out. Your favourite moment gets a spot on the shelf.
- In a café or at a market stall: write on the rectangle with a chalk pen or paint. It becomes a price tag or a frame for your offers. Your counter looks tidy and uniform. And setting up in the morning is quick.
- For lanterns and window decorations: stick tracing paper behind the cut-out. The light gets a clear, calm frame.
Good to know about MDF and HDF
HDF is made from finely shredded wood fibres that are pressed into an even board. Unlike solid wood, it has no knots and no running grain. For you, this means paints cover evenly and designs look crisp. That is exactly why HDF is so popular for painting, decoupage and decorating.
Care & durability
There's not much you need to do. Store the untreated cutout in a dry place and keep it away from constant moisture. Painting, oiling or varnishing it gives the surface extra protection. Your decoration then stays the way you made it for a long time.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the rectangle or glue things onto it? Yes, the HDF is left natural and can be painted, decorated with paper, coated or oiled. Paints and glue stick directly to the untreated surface.
Why do the edges have a brown rim? The cutout is laser-cut. This creates the typical brown rim along the cut edges. The edges themselves are smooth.
How tall is my rectangle at a given width? The rectangles are made in a 2:1 ratio. For example, at a width of 10 cm the height is 5 cm.
Does every piece look exactly the same? Wood is a purely natural material and shows different textures. Small variations are not a defect. They make every piece one of a kind.
Paint, paper and a few ideas are all you need. In one afternoon, you can turn this piece of HDF into something to give away or hang up. And it will last. Simply choose the width you want and get started.
