Every square is made of 3mm birch plywood and laser-cut. This gives smooth edges and exact sizes you won't have to worry about. We lacquer the raw boards on both sides ourselves at Bütic, in our own production in Pößneck. The satin-matt, water-based lacquer lets the wood grain and small knots show through. Wood is a purely natural material. Sometimes it's lighter, sometimes darker, and its structure varies. This is not a flaw. It makes every square one of a kind.
