Why this backpack cutout makes a difference in everyday life
Decorations you make yourself tell more than ready-made ones from the shop. When you paint, cover or label the backpack, you create something that fits your occasion exactly. That could be the school child's name or the colour of the party table. The shape is recognisable as a hiking rucksack, satchel or school bag. So it suits different occasions: the first day of school today, a hiking theme tomorrow, a gift tag the day after.
Material & finish
The cutout is made from 3 mm thick, high-density fibreboard (HDF/MDF). It feels pleasantly solid in your hand. It is easy to work with: glue on, paint, decorate. The laser cut leaves smooth edges, so you can hand the motif straight to children. Good to know: HDF is made from pressed wood fibres. These vary naturally in shade and can show small irregularities. This is not a defect. It makes every piece unique.

How to use the rucksack cutout
- For the first day of school: you write the children's names on small backpacks. Every place at the party table gets a personal keepsake.
- As a gift tag: a painted backpack on a ribbon instead of a paper card. Your present gets noticed before it is even unwrapped.
- As table scatter on the party table: spread small sizes between plates and candles. The party theme runs across the whole table.
- In model making: the cutout becomes a hiking rucksack in your scene. At 3 mm thick, it is sturdy enough to stand up and glue.
- In a shop or café: you decorate large cutouts for the shop window or the counter at school start time. Thanks to the set quantities, this works for whole decoration series without reordering.
- At school, nursery or craft group: every child paints their own fibreboard school bag. The project starts without preparation, because nothing needs sanding.
Good to know about the backpack as a motif
The Tornister, as the German school satchel used to be called, has been part of the first day of school in Germany for generations. The same goes for the Zuckertüte, or school cone. This custom has its roots in Thuringia and Saxony. The backpack cutout picks up exactly this image. That is why it suits school starts, first-day decorations and gifts for school children. It works just as well for hiking and travel themes.
Care & durability
There is not much you need to do. Simply store the untreated cutout in a dry place and it will keep its shape for a long time. With paint, varnish or glaze, you can design the surface the way you like and protect it at the same time.

Frequently asked questions
Is the rucksack cutout already varnished or treated? No, the HDF is in its natural state. It is untreated and not varnished or glazed. This means paints, varnishes and glue adhere well.
What can I use to decorate the cutout? You can glue things on, paint, colour or decorate it. For example, use acrylic paints, varnish or napkin decoupage.
Do I need to sand the edges before painting? No, the cutout is laser-cut and so has smooth edges. You can get started straight away.
Why do the cutouts look slightly different? HDF boards are made of pressed wood fibres. These can vary in shade and show small impurities. This is typical of the material and makes every piece unique.
