Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong. The Christmas pyramid is on the table and the nativity stable is almost finished. Only the roof still looks bare. With these wooden shingles in Black Forest shape left, you cover it row by row until your model looks like a real little house. The fine roof shingles are made of 3 mm poplar plywood and suit your next craft project. They are laser-cut in 28 sizes, so they match your scale exactly.
What changes for you
- Your model roof gets the look of traditional Black Forest houses. That comes from the typical Black Forest cut with the bevel on the left.
- You find the right shingle size for every project without cutting anything yourself. There are 28 sizes to choose from, from 15 mm x 7.5 mm to 150 mm x 75 mm.
- You design the shingles just as you like. Paint them, oil them, glue things on or leave them natural. The wood comes untreated.
- You lay them row by row, neatly and evenly. Every shingle is precisely laser-cut and has smooth edges.
- You only order as many as you really need, thanks to the flexible choice of quantity.
Why these wooden shingles make a real difference
An overlapping shingle roof turns a simple craft house into a little gem. The fine structure of the individual shingles adds depth and a handcrafted look to your model, whether it is a nativity scene, a bird house or a pyramid. And because every shingle has the same clean shape, the finished roof forms a calm, even pattern that you will enjoy looking at again and again.
Material & finish
The shingles are made of approx. 3 mm poplar plywood. We laser-cut them precisely after you order, in our own production in Pößneck. The laser cut gives smooth edges with the typical brown rim. This rim outlines the roof in a darker shade and makes each layer clearly visible. The wood is untreated – neither varnished nor glazed. So it takes paint, oil and glue reliably. As a natural material, every shingle shows its own grain, small colour differences or tiny knots. This is not a flaw. It is what makes each piece unique.

How to use the shingles
- Building a nativity scene in Advent: you cover the stable roof shingle by shingle – and the crib looks as if it really stood in the Black Forest.
- In model making: you clad houses, towers or mills true to scale – and your model gains visibly in detail.
- For decorating: you paint the shingles or glue things onto them for door wreaths, wall pictures or table decorations – made of real wood.
- In a shop or at the Christmas market: you create window and counter displays with shingle roofs – a handcrafted detail that customers notice.
- Our tip for the Christmas season: Attach the fine roof shingles row by row so that they overlap – for example when roofing a pyramid. This creates the typical roof look all by itself.
Good to know about the Black Forest shingle
In the Black Forest, roofs and façades have been covered with wooden shingles for centuries. The overlapping layout protects against wind and weather. It still shapes the look of the old farmsteads today. You bring exactly this traditional shape to your model in miniature. That is why the shingles go particularly well with nativity scenes, Christmas pyramids and rural model scenes.
Care & durability
There is not much you need to do. In their natural state, the shingles are meant for indoor use and stay looking good there for a long time. If your project is going outside – a bird house, for example – treat the wood first, for instance with oil. This protects it from moisture, and you can enjoy your roof for a long time.

Frequently asked questions
Are the shingles suitable for outdoor use? In their natural state, only for indoors. For outdoor use, you need to treat the wood, for example with oil – then it will stand up to wind and weather.
Can I paint the shingles or glue things onto them? Yes. The poplar plywood is untreated. You can glue, paint or oil it – paint and glue adhere well.
What is the brown rim on the edges? This is the typical rim left by the laser cut. It is part of the production process and gives the finished roof a lively, darker tone.
Do all shingles look exactly the same? The shape is precisely laser-cut and identical for all of them. Wood is a natural material, so brightness and grain can vary slightly – this makes each piece unique.
What does “bevel on the left” mean? The shingles are made in the Black Forest cut, where the bevelled edge sits on the left. When you lay them overlapping, this creates the characteristic roof pattern.
What counts is the moment you place the last shingle and step back. Suddenly your model has a proper roof over its head. Simply choose the size and quantity that suit your project.
