A favourite word above the sofa, your child's name on the bedroom door – written in Japanese script. With these Hiragana wooden letters, you put together your own lettering from the Japanese alphabet. Character by character, made to fit your wall. Out of 46 syllables you create a piece of décor that tells your story. Not the story of an off-the-shelf poster.

What changes for you

  • You create lettering that is entirely your own. You choose freely from all 46 Hiragana characters and order each character individually.
  • The light poplar wood gives your wall a calm, natural tone. It suits Japanese-inspired interiors.
  • You decide on the colour and finish yourself. The untreated wood can be painted, oiled or decorated with stickers and paper.
  • You'll find the right size for every surface. Choose 5 cm for a small door sign or 20 cm for large wall lettering.
  • Fixing the characters is easy. The light plywood letters are only 3 mm thick and can be glued or drilled.

Why Japanese script in wood makes a difference every day

Lettering you have put together yourself feels different from any shop-bought wall décor. It has a meaning that only you and your guests know. The clear, flowing shapes of the Hiragana characters are easy to recognise on the wall, even with just a few characters. An empty wall becomes a spot your eyes like to rest on.

Material & finish

The characters are made from 3 mm poplar plywood and laser-cut in our own production in Pößneck. This creates the typical brown edge, which gives every character a fine outline. The untreated surface takes paint, oil and glue well. So you have a free hand with your design. As a natural product, the wood shows slight variations in colour and its own grain. This makes every character unique and is not a defect. Precise laser cutting keeps even the fine lines of the characters clean and sturdy.

How to use the Hiragana wooden letters

  • As wall décor in the living room or bedroom: a favourite word in Japanese script above the sofa. The room says something about you, without much decorating.
  • As a door sign or name on a child's bedroom: your child's name in Hiragana on the door. A small detail that brings joy every day.
  • As a gift for Japan fans: a single character or a short word, lovingly wrapped. More personal than any shop-bought present.
  • For crafts and creative projects: paint, decorate or oil the characters to suit your project. Then add them to signs, boxes or collages.
  • In a café, sushi restaurant or shop: lettering on the wall or counter underlines your concept. It's quick to fit with glue or screws.

Good to know about Hiragana

Hiragana is one of the Japanese syllabaries. Each of the 46 basic characters stands for a whole syllable, not a single sound. That's why just 2 Japanese characters are often enough for a complete word. You can also reproduce almost any sound phonetically. So you can even put English names on the wall as Japanese lettering.

Care & durability

There isn't much you need to do. The untreated plywood just needs a dry spot and will then stay looking good for a long time. If you paint or oil the characters, you protect the surface even more. You also give it exactly the shade that matches your interior. Avoid constant moisture so the thin wood does not warp.

Options & what's included

  • Choose from all 46 basic Hiragana syllables of the (Japanese) alphabet
  • Four heights available: 5 cm, 10 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm
  • You receive each character you order individually. You put your lettering together yourself from several characters
  • Some characters consist of several individual parts

Frequently asked questions

Can I paint or oil the wooden letters? Yes. The poplar plywood is untreated. You can paint it, oil it or decorate it, just as you like.

Why do the characters have a brown edge? The characters are laser-cut. The brown edge forms naturally during cutting and gives every character a clear outline.

Are all characters the same height? No. The Hiragana characters have different proportions within the character set. We don't adjust them, so the original shapes are kept. This means individual characters may be a few millimetres smaller than the size ordered.

How do I fix the letters? You can glue or drill the characters. At only 3 mm thick, they are light. They are easy to fix to walls, doors or decorative objects.

Will I receive finished lettering? Each character is supplied individually. You choose the syllables you want and put your text together yourself. This leaves you completely free with layout and spacing.

Plywood and syllables are only the material. What counts is the moment you step back and read your word on the wall. You know: nobody else has this. Simply choose your characters and the right height.

Your legal guarantee rights

EU notice “Legal guarantee”: Minimum two-year legal guarantee protection for goods sold in the European Union. Consumers can claim their rights under the legal guarantee of conformity, for example if goods do not match the description or do not function as intended. Sellers are liable for any lack of conformity which existed when the goods were delivered, and which becomes apparent within the legal guarantee period. Sellers in such a situation are required to offer free repair or free replacement; in some cases, a price reduction or full reimbursement. Some countries have a longer legal guarantee period. For second-hand goods, a shorter period may apply, but not less than one year. For more information on your rights in a specific country, scan the QR code or ask the seller: europa.eu/youreurope/guarantees. What to do if you receive non-conforming goods: 1. Contact the seller as soon as possible to report the issue. 2. Provide proof of purchase, such as a receipt, invoice, or bank statement. Sellers and producers may also offer commercial guarantees, which apply independently from the legal guarantee. For example, you may see this GARAN label representing a commercial guarantee of durability offered by the producer at no additional cost and covering the entire good.
