The characters are laser-cut from 3 mm poplar plywood. That creates the fine brown edge that gives every digit a clear, clean outline. They are made in our own production in Pößneck. The front is left untreated, so you can paint, oil or cover it as you wish. Wood is a purely natural material. Each number varies in shade and shows its own grain. Sometimes there are small knots. This is not a flaw. It is what makes every piece unique.

Good to know about the Ubuntu font

The name Ubuntu comes from an African philosophy of life. It roughly stands for humanity towards others – “I am because we are”. The font of the same name was designed with round, friendly shapes. Care & durability

There is not much you need to do. Simply wipe off dust with a dry cloth. Keep the untreated wood away from constant moisture. That way the characters keep their light, even surface for a long time. If you paint or oil the front, it becomes even more durable.

Frequently asked questions

How are the characters fixed? Each number has strong transparent 3M transfer tape on the back. Just press it on and you're done. Alternatively, you can drill and screw the characters.

Can I colour the numbers? Yes. The front is left untreated and can be painted, oiled or covered.

Why is the full stop so much smaller than the numbers? Small symbols are made to the scale of the font, just as they are designed there. A full stop is therefore much smaller than the chosen number height.

Why do the characters look different? Wood is a natural material. Shade, grain and small knots vary. Every character is unique.

Where does the brown edge come from? The characters are laser-cut. The brown edge forms during cutting and is a typical feature of this look.
