A rainy afternoon. The craft table is set with paints, brushes and glue. Now all you need is a shape that makes children's eyes light up. This wooden hippo is made for exactly that. It's a friendly hippopotamus in 3 mm poplar plywood, untreated and ready for your ideas. Paint it, stick things on it or leave it natural. The blank becomes something you've designed yourselves.

What changes for you

  • You can start crafting straight away, with no sanding or finishing. That's because the hippo is laser-cut and has smooth edges.
  • You decorate it exactly as you like, with paint, oil or glue. That's because the wood comes untreated in its natural state.
  • You'll find the right size for every project, from a small gift tag to a large wall decoration. Choose any width from 5 to 50 cm in 1 cm steps.
  • Your hippo looks lively even before you paint it. That's because the face and outlines are laser-scored into the surface.
  • Planning bigger craft sessions is easy. The hippo comes singly or in sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100.

Why this wooden hippo makes a difference in everyday life

Shop-bought decorations look the same everywhere. A shape you've decorated yourself tells your own story. Crafting the wooden hippo with children gives you an afternoon together. At the end, there's something real to hang up: in the nursery, on a garland or on a present. And because the wood has a smooth, light surface, it fits easily into your existing décor.

Material & finish

The hippo is laser-cut from 3 mm poplar plywood. This gives it the typical brown edge, which makes the outline clear and fine. The top shows the laser-scored contours. The underside is left plain. So you can choose which side to decorate. The wood is untreated, not varnished or glazed. It takes paint, glue and oil directly. Every piece is made in our own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. Wood is a natural material and is never completely uniform. Brightness, grain and small knots vary. This makes every piece one of a kind, not a flaw.

How to use the wooden hippo

  • Crafting with children: each child paints their own hippo. At the end, a little safari hangs in the nursery, and everyone is proud of it.
  • As a gift tag: write a name on it and tie it to the ribbon. Your parcel won't need a greeting card.
  • For garlands: thread several hippos together above the changing table or for a children's party. The room is decorated in a few minutes.
  • In nurseries, schools or craft groups: with sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100, you have identical blanks for the whole group. No sawing needed.
  • In the shop window or at the counter: a large shape up to 50 cm wide catches people's eye. You can redecorate it again and again to suit the season.

Good to know about the hippo

The name comes from the Greek word “hippopotamus”. It literally means “river horse”. This is also where the German names Flusspferd and Nilpferd come from. As a friendly, round animal shape, the hippo has always been popular with children. That's why it suits a nursery, a christening or a children's party so well.

Care & durability

There isn't much to do. As the wood is untreated, it's best to keep the hippo dry and away from constant moisture. If you want to use it as a decoration for a long time, you can paint or oil it. This keeps the surface looking good for longer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paint the hippo straight away? Yes. The wood is untreated, not varnished or glazed. Paint, glue and oil stick directly, with no preparation.

Are both sides decorated? The top has laser-scored contours for the face and lines. The underside is left plain.

Do I need to sand the edges? No. The shape is laser-cut and has smooth edges. You can use it straight away. The brown edge is typical of laser cutting.

Why does each piece look slightly different? Wood is a purely natural material. Brightness and grain vary, and small knots are normal. This makes every hippo one of a kind.

What really counts is the moment your child hangs their own painted hippo on the wall and beams. Simply choose your width and the number of pieces. You'll design the rest together.
