The Advent wreath is up, the candles are lit – and there's just one piece of Scandinavia missing from your windowsill. A wooden Dala horse brings exactly that: the classic Swedish horse silhouette, untreated and ready for your colours, as if made for your winter décor. Whether you paint it, decorate it or leave it natural – a simple wooden cutout becomes your very own Dala horse.

What changes for you

  • You can style your décor exactly the way you like – because the wood is untreated and can be painted, decorated, coated or oiled.
  • Your motif always fits its spot, from a small gift tag to a large shop window piece. You can choose the width from 3 to 50 cm in 1 cm steps.
  • You can craft in a relaxed way, even with children – because the laser-cut edges are smooth and don't need sanding.
  • Your craft group, school class or market stall activity is well stocked – with sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100 pieces for a consistent look.
  • You get a little one-of-a-kind piece – because every piece of wood has its own grain and shade.

Why this Dala horse makes a difference every day

Scandinavian decor is all about calm and natural materials. That is exactly what the Dala horse brings to your home. On a shelf, at the window or on the Christmas table, its clear silhouette stays visible without dominating. And because you choose the size and design yourself, the Dala horse decoration fits in with what you already have. It doesn't compete with it.

Material & finish

The Dala horse is laser-cut from 3 mm plywood and made in Bütic's own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. The laser cut gives clean, smooth edges. It also leaves the typical brown edge, which gives the silhouette a warm, finished look. No extra finishing is needed. The wood is left untreated, neither varnished nor glazed. Paints, glues and oils adhere to it particularly well. As a purely natural material, wood is never completely uniform. Variations in shade, fine structures in the grain and small knots are part of it. They make every piece unique and are not a defect.

How to use your Dala horse

  • On an Advent afternoon: You lay out brushes, paints and a set of Dala horses on the table – and the children are absorbed for an hour, creating the loveliest gift tags along the way.
  • On the Christmas table: A small Swedish horse at every place, labelled with a name – and your guests find their seat along with a keepsake to take home.
  • At the window or on a shelf: a larger Dala horse 30 or 50 cm wide stays on display all year round. It sits calmly at the centre of your Scandinavian-style decor.
  • In a café or farm shop: You decorate the counter and shop window at Christmas with painted Dala horses – with a consistent look and quickly prepared thanks to sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100 pieces.
  • Crafting with groups: Nurseries, schools or seniors' groups design the same motif in their own style – and in the end a colourful herd of Dala horses hangs on the wall.

Good to know about the Dala horse

The Dala horse – Dalahäst in Swedish – comes from the Dalarna region, where it has been traditionally carved and brightly painted for generations; it has long been a symbol of all of Sweden. That's why the silhouette suits not only Christmas décor but anything with a Scandinavian feel – and if you paint your own horse, you carry on the old tradition in your own way.

Care & durability

There's not much you need to do: an occasional dry dusting is enough. As the plywood is untreated, you should avoid prolonged moisture – displayed indoors or sealed with paint and oil, your Dala horse will stay looking good for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Dala horse already painted? No, the wood is untreated and left natural – so you can paint, decorate, coat or oil it however you like.

Where does the brown rim come from? The Dala horse is laser-cut, which creates the typical dark rim with smooth edges – a feature of laser cutting, not a defect.

How tall is the horse at a given width? Width and height are the same: at a width of 10 cm, the height is also 10 cm.

Do all the horses look exactly the same? The shape does, the wood not quite: as a natural material, it shows varying shades, fine grain and occasionally small knots – which is exactly what makes each piece unique.

In the end, it's not about a wooden cutout. It's about the moment your hand-painted Swedish horse stands at the window and brings a little piece of Dalarna into your home. Simply choose your size – single or as a set – and start creating.
