Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong. You're sitting at the table with a stack of light wooden tiles in front of you. With every tile you add, a pattern grows that never repeats. The EinStein tile makes exactly that possible. It's a single shape that covers any surface without gaps, yet never forms a regular pattern. Use it as a puzzle for games night, as wall decoration or as a craft project with children. This EinStein V1 wooden tile is made for curious minds.
What changes for you
- You get a puzzle that never gets boring. The EinStein tile fills surfaces without gaps, and the pattern never repeats.
- You can decorate every tile just the way you like. The wood is untreated, so you can paint it, glue things to it, coat it or oil it.
- You get exactly the size your project needs. Choose any width from 3 cm to 50 cm in 1 cm steps.
- Your tiles fit together neatly. The laser-cut edges are smooth and the fit is precise.
- You have enough material to hand for larger areas. Order single tiles or a set of 10, 25, 50 or 100.
Why this EinStein tile makes a difference in everyday life
Some puzzles you solve once and then put away. The EinStein tile is different. It invites you to tinker, experiment and marvel. Lay some tiles normally and some mirrored, and you get a new picture every time that never repeats. A few wooden tiles become a talking point at the kitchen table, a pattern on the wall or a small maths adventure for the whole family.
Material & finish
Each tile is light in the hand and feels natural. It's made from 3 mm poplar plywood. The tiles are laser-cut, so the edges are smooth. They also have the typical brown edge that comes from laser cutting. The wood is untreated, with no varnish or glaze. That's why paints, glues and oils adhere particularly well. Wood is a natural material, so every tile turns out slightly different. Varying shades, fine grain and small knots are part of it and make each piece unique. The tiles are made in our own production in Pößneck, Thuringia.

How to use the EinStein tile
- On games night: You tip a set out onto the table. While the rain falls outside, everyone puzzles over how to fill the surface without gaps.
- Crafting with children: Everyone paints their tiles in their own colours. Together you create a wall picture that is guaranteed to exist only once.
- As wall decoration: You stick painted or oiled tiles to the wall in a pattern. Visitors will stop and take a closer look.
- In class or a maths course: With a set of 25 or 50, you can make aperiodic tiling something to touch. It's hard to find a clearer way to teach the topic.
- As a gift for puzzle fans and mathematicians: This shape has made history. Lovingly wrapped, it becomes a small gift with a eureka moment.
Good to know about the EinStein tile
This tile shape was discovered by David Smith from Yorkshire in November 2022. For the first time, a surface can be covered without gaps using just one single shape, without ever forming a periodic pattern. To do this, the tile is laid normally and now and then mirrored. That's what makes it so special. It's a piece of recent maths history that you can hold, lay out and decorate yourself.
Care & durability
There isn't much you need to do. Store the tiles in a dry place and keep them away from constant moisture. That way they keep their shape and their light, natural look for a long time. Painting or oiling them gives the surface extra protection. Choose whatever suits your project.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the tiles or glue things to them? Yes. The wood is untreated with a natural finish. You can paint it, glue things to it, coat it or oil it.
Why do the tiles have a brown edge? The tiles are laser-cut. This creates the typical brown edge. The laser cut also gives smooth edges and a neat fit.
How does gap-free tiling work? The EinStein tile is laid normally and now and then mirrored. This way it covers any surface without gaps, and no periodic pattern forms.
Do all tiles look the same? The shape is identical, but the wood isn't. As a natural material, it shows varying shades, fine grain and occasionally small knots. That makes each piece unique.
Which size should I choose? As a guide: at a width of 10 cm, the tile is 7.21 cm high. You can order any width from 3 cm to 50 cm in 1 cm steps. Choose small for delicate decorations and large for wall pictures.
A wooden tile is only the start. The best part is the moment when suddenly everyone at the table joins in. And a pattern appears that has never existed before. Just choose your width and quantity, and get started.
