Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong. The table is full of paints. The brushes are ready and the children are waiting. All that's missing is a motif that tells a story straight away. The Sad Tom wooden face is just that: a sad smiley made of plywood. With his drooping mouth, he's ready to be painted, decorated and designed. He's made for your next crafting afternoon. A tiny 3 cm for a card or a generous 50 cm for the wall: you choose the size, Tom brings the expression.
What changes for you
- You can start straight away without any preparation. The wood is unfinished and takes paint, glue and oil well.
- Your decoration gets clear, expressive outlines. The lines are scored into the surface by the laser, so the face is easy to recognise.
- No sanding is needed when crafting with children. The laser-cut edges are smooth and clean.
- You'll find the right size for every project. Choose any size from 3 to 50 cm in 1 cm steps.
- Planning bigger craft sessions is easy. Order single pieces or sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100.
Why this wooden face makes a difference in everyday life
A sad face seems an unusual choice for decoration at first. That's exactly what gets people talking about Tom. He shows moods: on the pinboard, on a bedroom door or in pictures you design yourself. Instead of random decoration, you get something with a wink. It starts conversations, and you can redesign it again and again. And because Tom is made of wood, each piece has a noticeable weight and a smooth surface in your hand. That feels very different from printed paper.
Material & finish
Sad Tom is laser cut from 3 mm plywood. This gives precise outlines and smooth edges that don't splinter. The top shows the scored outline of the face. The underside is left natural. The wood is neither varnished nor stained, so paint, glue and oil adhere reliably. Every cutout is made in our own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. Wood is a natural material. Each piece shows its own grain, different shades and occasionally small knots. This is not a flaw – it makes every piece one of a kind.

How to use Sad Tom
- Crafting with children: each child paints their own Tom. In the end, a whole gallery of little faces hangs on the wall.
- On the pinboard or bedroom door: one look at Tom and everyone knows today's mood. Use him as a mood barometer for the family or the office.
- In pictures and collages: combine him with other faces to create a picture that shows feelings without saying a word.
- On cards and small gifts: stick on the 3 cm version, and a plain card gets a three-dimensional wooden face.
- For nurseries, schools or therapy: with a set of 10, 25, 50 or 100 pieces, you can supply whole groups. There's no need to reorder single pieces.
- In a shop window or store: a large Tom of up to 50 cm draws attention. Use him for a closing-down sale or a farewell with a wink, for example.
Good to know about the sad smiley
Smileys have long been a visual language of their own. A single face shows the mood at a glance – without any words. That's why faces like Sad Tom are often used in nurseries, schools and when working with feelings. One example is a mood barometer that lets children show how they are feeling right now.
Care & durability
There's not much you need to do. Keep the unfinished cutout dry and avoid constant moisture. Then the wood will keep its shape and look good for a long time. If you paint, oil or stain Tom, you protect the surface even more. And you give him your own look at the same time.
