Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong.A christening is coming up, or your godchild's confirmation. Or you need a motif for RE lessons. And it should be something real, not plastic. A wooden Celtic cross is made for this. It is an untreated plywood cutout that you can paint, decorate or simply use as it is. A plain piece of wood becomes a small gift or decoration that really comes from you.
What changes for you
- You design the cross just the way you want. The wood is untreated, so you can paint it, stick things on it, varnish it or oil it.
- You'll find the right size for every occasion, from a small hanging ornament to a large wall cross. Heights range from 5 to 70 cm and can be chosen in 1 cm steps.
- You don't need to sand anything before you start. The edges are cleanly laser-cut and smooth.
- Crafting with children stays relaxed. The thin, light plywood is easy to handle and has no rough cut edges.
- You give something that lasts. A wooden cross made in Germany instead of mass-produced goods.
Why this Celtic cross makes a difference in everyday life
A ready-made decorative cross looks like a thousand others. A wooden blank only becomes what it should be through your hands. Brightly painted for a child's room. Plain and natural on the wall. Or as a personal addition to a christening card. This openness is what makes the cutout so rewarding. It adapts to your occasion, not the other way round.
Material & finish
The cross is made of 3 mm plywood and laser-cut in our own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. The laser cut gives clean, smooth edges. It also leaves the typical brown edge, which traces the outline with a fine line. The wood is untreated, neither varnished nor glazed. Paints, glues and oils stick to it particularly well. Wood is a natural material, so every cross turns out a little different. Some are lighter, some darker, each with its own grain and occasionally small knots. This makes every piece one of a kind, not faulty.

How to use the Celtic cross
- For a christening, communion or confirmation: paint a small cross with a name and date. You hand over a gift that will be kept for a long time.
- For crafting with children in RE lessons or at church: every child designs their own cross. At the end, they take something home they made themselves.
- As wall decoration: hang a large cross in natural wood or oiled. Your hallway or living room gets a calm, natural focal point.
- For decorating cards and gifts: a small cross on a greetings card sets it apart from a shop-bought one.
- For parishes and church fêtes: prepared in larger numbers, craft stations can be set up quickly. One motif, many sizes, little effort.
Good to know about the Celtic cross
The Celtic cross is also called a high cross or Irish cross. It combines the Christian cross with a ring around the point where the arms meet. It has shaped the landscape of Ireland and Scotland since the early Middle Ages. This long tradition makes it a particularly expressive motif for christenings, confirmations, remembrance and church occasions. It also suits anyone who loves Celtic symbols and Irish culture.
Care & durability
There isn't much you need to do. Untreated wood looks best when kept dry. Avoid constant damp and wet conditions. If you paint, varnish or oil the cross, you protect the surface even more. That way it keeps its look for years.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the cross or stick things on it? Yes. The wood is untreated and takes paints, glues and oils very well. It is ideal for crafting, painting and decorating.
Why are the edges brown? The cross is laser-cut. This creates the typical brown edge. It is part of the process and also gives smooth edges that need no finishing.
Why does my cross look slightly different from the picture? Wood is a natural material. Shade, grain and small knots vary. This is what makes every cross one of a kind.
Which size is right? You choose any height between 5 and 70 cm in 1 cm steps. Small sizes suit cards and hanging ornaments, large ones work as wall decoration.
A piece of plywood is only the start. What counts is the moment you hold something you designed yourself. And you know there is no other one exactly like it. Just choose your size and get started.
