Why this wooden prairie dog makes everyday life easier
A ready-made cutout does the hardest part for you: the sawing. You can focus on the fun part – designing, painting, decorating. The silhouette is easy to recognise. So even unpainted, it works as simple decoration on a shelf, in the window or on the table.
Material & finish
The prairie dog is laser-cut from 3 mm plywood. This gives it the typical lightly browned edge, which outlines the shape. The edges are smooth and the finish is clean. The cutout sits comfortably in your hand and is easy to work on further. The wood is untreated, neither varnished nor stained. Colour variations, small knots and differences in the grain are part of a natural material. They make every piece one of a kind.

How to use the wooden prairie dog
- On a crafting afternoon: each child paints their own prairie dog. At the end, a whole colourful colony stands on the windowsill.
- When wrapping presents: tie a small figure to the ribbon. A plain parcel becomes a personal greeting.
- At nursery or school: with a set of 25 or 50, every child has the same shape. You save preparation time and the results look consistent.
- In a shop or shop window: use it as part of a themed display, for example on prairies, animals or nature. At 50 cm high, the silhouette is easy to see from a distance. Smaller sizes work as table scatter alongside.
- For decorating at home: place it unpainted on a shelf, or oil it for a warm wood tone. Just as it suits your home.
Good to know about the prairie dog
By the way, the prairie dog doesn't get its name from being related to dogs. It's named after its barking alarm call. The first settlers on the North American prairie were reminded of dogs. This story makes the shape a good fit for themed decorations around the Wild West, prairies and wildlife. From children's birthday parties to shop window displays.
Care & durability
There isn't much you need to do. The plywood is untreated, so it's best to keep the prairie dog dry and avoid constant moisture. Painting, varnishing or oiling it gives the surface extra protection. That way your decoration stays looking good for a long time.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the prairie dog? Yes. The wood is untreated. You can paint it, glue things on, coat it or oil it. Acrylic paints, coloured pencils or oil adhere well to the untreated surface.
Why is the edge brown? The cutout is laser-cut. This creates the typical dark edge that neatly frames the silhouette. The edges are still smooth.
Does every piece look the same? The shape is always identical, but the wood isn't. As a natural material, it varies in lightness and grain and sometimes has small knots. That makes every piece unique.
How wide is the figure? The width depends on the height you choose. For reference: at 10 cm high, the prairie dog is 7.5 cm wide.
A wooden cutout is just the start. Then comes the moment when everyone at the craft table is colouring at once. A little later, a figure you designed yourself gets a place of honour. Just choose the height and quantity, and the prairie dog will be on its way to you.
