Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong. The advent calendar still needs number tags, the children want to paint door signs, and the market stall is short of little price boards – so often it all starts with a simple blank surface. That's exactly what these wooden squares are made for on your craft table: square wooden boards in 3 mm plywood, laser-cut with smooth edges, untreated and ready for your ideas. Choose your size from 5 x 5 to 40 x 40 cm – and simply get started.
What changes for you
- You can start creating straight away instead of sawing and sanding first – because every board is cut square and arrives with smooth, laser-cut edges.
- Your paints, glues and oils take reliably – because the wood is untreated, with no varnish or glaze.
- You'll find the right format for every project, from a small gift tag to a large sign – thanks to sizes from 5 x 5 to 40 x 40 cm in 1 cm steps.
- Your series projects, such as place cards or Advent numbers, match each other. That's because you can order 1, 5 or 10 squares in the same size.
- You work with a cleanly made piece. Every square is produced in Bütic's own production in Pößneck, Thuringia.
Why these wooden squares make a difference every day
A good base takes the tedious prep work off your hands and lets you get straight to the fun part: creating. Whether you're crafting with children, labelling a gift or need small notice boards in your shop – the even shape makes the result look neat and well thought out. That way, a spontaneous idea at the kitchen table becomes a finished piece you'll be happy to show off, without any detours.
Material & finish
The squares are made of 3 mm plywood – thin enough to work with easily, yet stable enough as a base for paint, decoupage or anything you stick on. Laser cutting gives smooth edges and the typical brown rim that frames many craft projects with a touch of warmth. The wood is untreated, so it's neither varnished nor glazed: you can paint it, oil it, stick things on it or use it just as it is. As a purely natural material, each square varies slightly in shade, and small knots or fine irregularities in the grain are part of its character – that's exactly what makes every piece unique, not a flaw.

How to use the wooden squares
- At a crafting afternoon with children: each child paints their own square – and takes home a door sign they've designed themselves.
- Before the family celebration, you write on small squares to use as place cards. And every guest finds their seat at the laid table.
- During Advent: 24 squares painted or decorated with numbers – and your homemade advent calendar looks beautifully coordinated.
- In model making: the 3 mm boards serve as bases, floors or walls – so your small building projects stand on a clean foundation.
- In a café, at the bakery counter or on a market stall: labelled squares as price tags or notice boards – your goods are lovingly presented, and new signs are quickly made.
Good to know about plywood
Plywood is made of several layers of wood glued crosswise – which keeps it remarkably stable even at just 3 mm thick, and it warps far less than a solid wood board of the same thickness. That's exactly why it works so well as a base for signs, tags and craft projects that need to stay flat and straight.
Care & durability
There isn't much you need to do: store the untreated squares in a dry place and keep them away from constant moisture, and they'll stay flat and attractive for a long time. If you'd like to protect the surface or add colour, you can simply paint, oil or glaze it – whatever suits your project.

Frequently asked questions
Is the wood treated? No, the squares are untreated, neither varnished nor glazed. You can paint them, stick things on them, oil them or use them in their natural state.
Why do the edges have a brown rim? The squares are laser-cut. This creates the typical dark rim – the edges are smooth and don't need sanding.
Are colour differences and small knots normal? Yes. Wood is a natural material, so shade and grain vary from piece to piece, and small knots can occur too. That makes every square unique.
Can I combine different sizes? Yes, you choose each size individually from 5 x 5 to 40 x 40 cm in 1 cm steps – so you can put together exactly the formats your project needs.
In the end, it's not about a piece of plywood. It's about the moment a plain wooden surface becomes your own sign, your calendar or a keepsake you painted together. Simply choose your size and quantity – and start creating.
