Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong.New Year's Eve is getting closer. The anniversary gift is ready. And you're still missing that one motif to round it all off. A wooden hourglass sums up the theme of time in a quiet, atmospheric way. Use it as a gift tag, as table decoration or as a craft blank that you design just the way you like. The untreated cutout is made for this. It's almost like a blank page, only in wood.
What changes for you
- You design the motif exactly to your taste. The plywood is untreated, so you can stick things on it, paint it, coat it or oil it.
- Your decoration looks finished straight away. That's thanks to the smooth laser-cut edges. Their typical brown rim neatly frames the silhouette.
- You'll find the right size for every project. Choose anything from 3 cm for small tags to 50 cm for the wall, in 1 cm steps.
- You can supply larger craft groups or events without extra effort. The wooden hourglass comes singly or in sets of 10, 25, 50 or 100 pieces.
- You're holding an honest natural material. Its individual grain makes every piece unique.
Why this wooden hourglass makes a difference in everyday life
A ready-made part looks the same everywhere. A motif you design yourself tells your story. With the hourglass silhouette, you can show themes around time: at New Year, for an anniversary or as a calm symbol on the wall. The shape is clear and timeless, so it suits any style. Leave it natural, paint it in bright colours or give it a light coat of oil.
Material & finish
The cutout is made from 3 mm plywood and laser-cut. This gives smooth edges that need no finishing. You'll notice the clean workmanship as you work with it. The wood is untreated, not varnished or glazed. Paints and glue stick well, and you decide on the surface yourself. As a natural material, wood is never completely uniform. Differences in shade, fine textures and small knots are part of it. They make every piece unique and are not a defect. Every hourglass is made in our own production at Bütic in Pößneck, Thuringia.

How to use the wooden hourglass
- On New Year's Eve: Put a small hourglass at each place setting or on the napkin ring. The countdown to the new year becomes a topic as soon as you lay the table.
- For an anniversary or jubilee: Add names and a date, and the cutout becomes a gift tag. It stays on as a keepsake after the gift is unwrapped.
- Crafting with children: Everyone paints their own hourglass. At the end, a colourful row of one-offs hangs in the window.
- In a café or shop: Combine several sizes in the shop window or on the counter to carry a time theme. It's quick to set up and lasts a long time.
- For wedding or event decoration: With a set of 25, 50 or 100 pieces, you can decorate all the tables in the same style. There's no need to source each piece separately.
Good to know about the hourglass
The hourglass has been used to measure time since the Middle Ages. To this day, it is probably the best-known symbol of time running out. That's exactly why the motif suits occasions where time is the focus: New Year, anniversaries and jubilees, or as part of your wall decoration.
Care & durability
There's not much you need to do. Keep the untreated cutout dry and away from constant moisture. That way the wood keeps its shape and its natural look for a long time. You can also protect the surface with paint, varnish or oil if you like.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint the hourglass or stick things on it? Yes. The plywood is untreated, neither varnished nor glazed. Paints, varnishes, oils and glue stick well to the surface.
Why does the cutout have a brown edge? The edge is created during laser cutting and is typical of this cutting method. It also gives smooth edges that need no finishing.
How wide is the hourglass at the height I've chosen? The proportions stay the same. At a height of 10 cm, the width is 6 cm. From this you can work out the width for any other height.
Do all cutouts look exactly the same? The shape does, the wood doesn't. As a natural material, it shows differences in shade, fine textures and small knots. This makes every piece unique.
A wooden cutout becomes your own the moment your design hangs on a gift or stands on the New Year's Eve table. Then it carries your personal touch. Simply choose the height and quantity that suit your project.
