Why this wooden compass makes a difference
A ready-cut motif takes care of the most time-consuming part of the preparation. You don't need to draw anything or saw anything out. You go straight to the fun part: decorating. With its fine lines, the compass already looks decorative in its natural state. It brings navigation, seafaring and hiking into your decorations with no effort at all. In the end, you hold a piece that looks handmade but is neatly finished.
Material & finish
The compass is laser-cut from 3 mm poplar plywood in our own production in Pößneck, Thuringia. This gives smooth edges without splinters. They feel good in the hand and are well suited to children's hands too. You also get the brown edge typical of laser-cut pieces, which gives the motif a natural wood look. All outlines are engraved, so the compass rose and details stay clearly visible. The wood is untreated, neither varnished nor stained. Grain and shade vary slightly from piece to piece, and small knots are normal. That is what makes each piece of this natural material one of a kind.

How to use the wooden compass
- At a treasure hunt birthday party: every child paints their own compass. At the end, they take home a keepsake they designed themselves.
- In a school project on compass points or orientation: the engraved lines show the compass rose, and the children fill it in with colour. Learning and crafting in one.
- For nautical decorations at home: hang the compass in the window or arrange it with shells and rope. It brings a holiday mood into your home.
- As an element on cards and gifts: stuck onto a card for a coming-of-age celebration, confirmation or farewell, the compass says "safe travels" without any words.
- For a café, holiday park or shop with a nautical theme: order in larger quantities and decorate shop windows, counters or hands-on activities in a uniform style. There's no need to have each piece made individually.
Good to know about the compass
For centuries of seafaring, the compass has been a symbol of orientation and of finding your own way. That's why the motif suits more than nautical decorations. It also makes a symbolic gift, for example for a coming-of-age celebration, confirmation, graduation or a farewell, when someone sets off for new shores.
Care & durability
There's not much you need to do. As the wood is untreated, an occasional dry dusting is enough. Avoid constant damp and wet conditions. Or paint or oil the cutout. Then it keeps its shape for a long time, and you're free to design it as you like.

Frequently asked questions
Is the wood treated? No, the poplar plywood is untreated – neither varnished nor glazed. You can paint, decorate, stain or oil it as you like.
Can I order any size between 5 and 50 cm? Yes, you can choose the height freely in 1 cm steps. As a guide: at a height of 10 cm, the width is 9 cm.
Why are the edges brown? The compass is laser-cut. The brown edge is typical of this process. It also means the edges are smooth without any finishing work.
Does every piece look the same? Not quite. Wood is a natural material. Shade and grain vary, and small knots may occur. That is what makes each piece one of a kind.
Is the compass suitable for outdoor use? If untreated, you should protect it from constant damp. A suitable paint or oil will make it more resistant.
A wooden cutout is only the starting point. What counts is the moment a child proudly holds up their self-painted compass. Or when your nautical decorations create exactly the mood you had in mind. Just choose your size and quantity. You design the rest yourself.
