Not sure which to choose? With a Bütic gift voucher you can never get it wrong. The family name on the front door, a saying above the kitchen bench or a sign on the shop counter. With Old German wooden letters, you turn it into lettering that lasts. You put your word together letter by letter from the Old German alphabet. You choose capitals and lower case, and the height that suits your space. The result looks as if it were made just for your door.
What changes for you
- You design your very own text, because every letter is available individually – from the Old German H to the Old German B.
- Your lettering fits a door, wall or counter, because you choose the height between 5 cm and 20 cm.
- You decide on the look yourself. The poplar wood is untreated and can be painted, oiled or glued over. Or you simply leave the light beige natural tone as it is.
- You can put the letters up easily, because you can glue or drill them – just as your project needs.
- Your text looks neat from the start. The laser-cut edges with their typical brown rim trace the outline of every character.
Why Old German letters make a difference in everyday life
A printed note gets lost. Lettering in Leipziger Fraktur stays in view. The flowing script with its long tradition makes a name at the entrance or a word on the counter look lasting and personal. At home, it becomes a warm, handmade detail on the wall. In a shop, it shows craft and tradition at first glance.
Material & finish
Each letter is laser-cut from 3 mm poplar plywood in Bütic's own production in Pößneck. The cut is clean, right down to the fine flourishes of the Fraktur. The laser leaves the typical brown edge, which brings out the shape. The wood is left natural. Grain and slight variations in colour are part of it and make every character one of a kind. Because the surface is untreated, it takes paint, oil or glue well.

How to use the Old German letters
- At the front door: the family name in Fraktur above the door. Guests know they are in the right place before they ring the bell.
- In the living room: a favourite word as wall decoration above the sofa. Calm, natural and finished without any further decorating.
- In a bakery or café: “Brot”, “Kaffee” or the name of your business on the counter. The traditional script shows your craft at a glance.
- At a market stall: clear lettering in Old German script. It is quick to put up and makes your stall easy to spot from a distance.
- For crafts and gifts: paint the letters in the colour you like and give a name that nobody else has in this form.
Good to know about Leipziger Fraktur
For centuries, Fraktur was the standard typeface in German-speaking countries. Well into the 20th century, it shaped books, newspapers and shop signs. That is why these letters look old and familiar at the same time. Lettering in this script suits anything that should show permanence, from a house name to the signs of a long-established business.
Care & durability
There is not much you need to do. Untreated poplar wood stays looking good for a long time in dry indoor areas. Avoid constant moisture. If you paint or oil the letters, you protect the surface further and decide on the look at the same time.

Frequently asked questions
Why is a lower-case letter smaller than the selected size? The selected height applies to the capital letters. Lower-case letters are made to the same scale, as designed in the typeface. For comparison, using the Arial font at 10 cm: the capital O is 10 cm high, the small a is 7.3 cm and the small h is 9.7 cm. The small g is 10 cm high, but reaches about 2.6 cm below the baseline. So order all the letters for one word in the same size. Then capitals and lower-case letters will match.
Can I paint the letters or glue things onto them? Yes. The wood is left natural and can be painted, oiled or glued over. This way, you can match the lettering to your interior.
Where does the brown rim on the edges come from? The letters are laser-cut. The brown rim forms naturally during cutting and brings out the outline of the script.
Are there Old German numbers too? Yes, we offer Old German numbers and special characters made of wood in our other products. You can add house numbers or years in the same style.
Are all letters made in one piece? No, some letters in Leipziger Fraktur come in several parts. When you put them up, simply fit the parts together. Glued or drilled, they stay firmly in place.
What matters is the moment your name hangs above the door. Visitors can see at the entrance that someone who cares about detail lives here. Simply choose your letters and the right height. The Fraktur does the rest.
