Poplar is one of the lightest native woods. It has an evenly light, almost cream-coloured surface. That is exactly why it is so good for painting and decorating. You don't need to do much. Indoors, you can simply use the characters as they arrive. If you paint or oil them, you give the surface extra protection and add colour. Keep the untreated wood away from constant moisture. Then the characters will keep their shape and light look for a long time.

• Important note on size: The height you choose refers to the numbers. Small special characters such as full stop, comma or minus are made to the scale of the font. This makes them much smaller than the size you choose. For comparison: in the Arial font, a full stop at 10 cm is only about 1.4 cm in size.
• So for a date, a number or a sentence, order all the characters in the same size. That way they match each other.

Where does the brown edge come from? The characters are laser cut. This creates the typical brown edge, which clearly traces the outline of each character.
