Material & finish

The numbers and special characters are laser-cut from 3 mm poplar plywood. They have the brown edge typical of this process. It neatly frames each contour. The wood is left in its natural state. So you can decorate it straight away or paint, oil and cover it as you like. As a natural material, wood is never completely uniform. Brightness, grain and small knots vary from character to character. This makes each piece one of a kind, not faulty. Everything is made by Bütic itself, with clean finishing down to the smallest curve.

Good to know about the Ubuntu font

The name Ubuntu comes from southern Africa. It roughly means humanity and togetherness. The font of the same name became known through the Ubuntu operating system. Its round, open shapes look friendly and modern at the same time. That is why it suits personal occasions such as a birth, birthday or wedding, where lettering should look warm rather than stern.

Care & durability

There is not much you need to do. Kept dry, standing or hanging, the characters keep their shape and colour for a long time. Avoid constant moisture, as the wood is untreated. If you paint or oil the surface, you make it more resistant – and give it your own colour at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the full stop so much smaller than the chosen size? Small special characters such as a full stop, comma or minus are made to the same scale as they are designed in the font. This is why they are much smaller than the number height. Order all the characters of your lettering in the same size, and the proportions will match.

Can I paint or cover the characters? Yes. The poplar plywood is untreated and can be painted, oiled or covered. It is also good for crafting with children or for decoration in the colour of your interior.

Where does the brown edge come from? The characters are laser-cut. This creates the typical brown edge on the cut edges, which subtly outlines the contours.

Can the characters be used outdoors? The wood is untreated, so it belongs in a dry place. Paint or oil makes the surface more resistant. Even so, you should avoid constant moisture.
